Harvey Weinstein Blames Midwest for GRINDHOUSE’s Failure

East Coast film magnante Harvey Weinstein, head of Miramax, is “disappointed” by the failure of “Grindhouse” at the weekend box office, and blames it on the fact that the film is over 3 hours long and those Goddamn stupid Midwesterners. Well, okay, he didn’t say those exact words. He said to Deadline Hollywood, “We didn’t educate the South or Midwest. In the West and the East, the movie played well. It played well in strong urban settings. But we missed the boat on the Midwest and the South.” So you see, the reason “Grindhouse” didn’t do so well was because the South and Midwest are too stupid to “get” the genius of scratching the film print and purposely “losing” entire scenes from the movie. And oh yeah, the movie was nearly 4 hours long and it’s a gory flick that opened on the day of Jesus’ rebirth. Hmm…

So why did I think the film fail? Three reasons:

1) Too long. 3 hours and 12 minutes long? You better have Orcs and Hobbits in your movie if it’s gonna be that long.
2) Too “inside baseball”. What’s a “grindhouse”? Why are there whole scenes missing? Why is the film all scratched up?
3) Not enough of either Rodriguez or Tarantino. Fans of Rodriguez’s action-a-second style were turned off by Tarantino’s talk-about-nothing style; likewise, the people who love Tarantino’s irrelevant pop culture were turned off by Rodriguez’s empty style over substance. The people who love both directors’ style were too few.

“Okay, who stole my crappy filmstock?”
