Variety reports that idling director James Cameron (he of “Titanic” fame, although for my money “Aliens”, “T2″, and “True Lies” are his real works of genius) has finally gotten off his duff and gotten back into the directing game. First up is the science fiction flick “Avatar”, which is budgeted at $200 million (not a lot of money for 2007) and scheduled for a 2009 release by 20th Century Fox. This means Cameron has shelved “Battle Angel”, the big-screen adaptation of the popular Japanese manga “Battle Angel Alita” for the time being.
So what’s “Avatar” about? Says IMDB.com: “In the future, Jake, a paraplegic war veteran, is brought to another planet, Pandora, which is inhabited by the Na’vi, a humanoid race with their own language and culture. Those from Earth find themselves at odds with each other and the local culture.”
Hmm, kinda odd sounding premise. But then again, Cameron has been spending decades on the premise and waiting for technology to catch up with what he wants to do, so even if the story sucks (ala “Titanic”) you know you’ll get your month’s worth. All $200 million of it.
Variety has a long article on it. Read it here.
