French actor Gaspard Ulliel steps into the humongous shoes of Anthony Hopkins as young Hannibal Lecter, aka Hannibal the Cannibal, the mad genius serial killer who would terrorize Jodie Foster and Edward Norton, in the upcoming “Hannibal Rising”, Thomas Harris’s prequel to his popular Hannibal character. What makes me have faith that this may be good is the attachment of Harris’s name as writer of the novel and the screenplay. That in itself should mean something good.
In the film, Gaspard Ulliel is a young Hannibal, who survives World War II, goes to live with his Uncle, falls in love with the Uncle’s wife (played by Gong Li), and goes around killing the war criminals who helped make him an orphan. It should prove to be gory fun for all.
“Hannibal Rising” is directed by Peter Webber (”Girl with a Pearl Earring”) and returns to cinemas February 9th, 2007.
