I know this is going to stun you, but bear with me: NBC’s new show, “Raines”, which stars Jeff Goldblum as a Detective with mental problems that results in him “seeing” dead people. But wait, don’t go off half-cock just yet. It sounds like the premise is stolen directly from NBC’s other show about someone who can see dead people, “Medium”, but it’s really not. You see, Goldblum’s character, Raines, can’t actually see dead people — he’s just so psychologically messed up, and coupled with his writer’s creativity (his character wanted to be a writer, but became a cop instead), that he imagines the dead talking to him. The problem is that he can’t get rid of his imagination — that is, until he solves the murder, after which they disappear.
And here’s the thing: “Raines” is actually a really good show. Goldblum is fantastic in it, and the premise, once you get over that it’s “stolen” from “Medium” or “The Ghost Whisperer” (which in itself seems stolen from “Medium”, which itself seems stolen from “Millennium”, which itself seems stolen, etc etc), you can appreciate the show for its creativity and fun. The first episode, the pilot, has Alexa Davalos (”Chronicles of Riddick”) as a murdered prostitute. With next week’s episode, another movie vet in Madeleine Stowe joins the cast as Raines’ therapist.
So if you get a chance, give “Raines” a chance. It’s really, really good, and you’ll thank me for it. Anyways, here are some pics of Madeleine Stowe, in case you forgot what she looks like, despite being one of Hollywood’s most endearingly beautiful women for decades. (”The Last of the Mohicans” is still one of my favorite movies of all time…)
