“Saw III” Slices and Dices the Competition
Man, stupid American moviegoing kids love pointless movie sequels, if the prodigious $34.3 million take over the weekend by horror sequel “Saw III” is any indication. Marty Scorsese’s ultra-violent crime flick “The Departed” came in second with $9.8 million, while magic flick “The Prestige” came in third with $9.6 million. The biggest disappointment so far is Clint Eastwood’s vastly superior World War II movie “Flags of Our Fathers”, which has only managed a measly $19.9 million in 10 days, despite a production budget of $90 mil, which when added to the PR cost, probably brings the film in at around $110 mil, or thereabouts. What can I say — American kids love stupid horror sequels. At least, during Halloween. The real winners here? The marketing guru who decided to release a “Saw” sequel every Halloween. Brilliant!
