So the Wachowski Brothers have decided to bring the popular old school Japanese anime “Speed Racer”, about a guy and his groovy white car, to the big screen. Now I have absolutely no idea why this would appeal to them, except on some deep down “back when we were kids we loved it” level, but the Hollywood Reporter is reporting this, so it’s pretty much true. Still, the Wachowski??? From “The Matrix” to “V for Vendetta” to…“Speed Racer”????
From the Hollywood Reporter:
Based on the classic 1960s series created by anime pioneer Tatsuo Yoshida that later was retooled for North American audiences, the big-screen film will follow the adventures of the young race car driver Speed in his quest for glory in his thundering gadget-laden vehicle, Mach 5. The movie will feature other characters from the show, including Speed’s family and his mysterious archrival, Racer X.
The Wachowski do family friendly fare. Wow. I thought I’d never see the day. Remember, these guys started their career writing and directing the lesbian-crime caper “Bound”.
