Will Smith is the last man on Earth. Or at least he will think he is on November 2007, when Smith stars in the long gestating sci-fi/horror project “I am Legend”, about a man named Neville (Smith) who might just be the last man on planet Earth. Now that in itself might not be such a bad thing — think about it: No more Tyra Banks, Oprah, Madonna — but Neville is also fighting a brood of vampires since, well, Neville is the last normal man on Earth. Everyone else has become vampires, thanks to Neville’s next-door neighbor. Or is he? As Neville will discover, there other normal people still around. Or are they? Hmm…
“I am Legend” Is based on the novel by Richard Matheson (”What Dreams May Come”) and was adapted for the movies twice already — the 1964 Vincent Price flick “The Last Man on Earth” and the 1971 version, “The Omega Man”, starring Charlton Heston. The property had been attached to just about every leading man in Hollywood at one time or another, but it appears as if Will Smith was the only man who could make it happen.
Francis Lawrence (”Constantine”) will helm from a script by Akiva Goldsman (”A Beautiful Mind”). Smith stars alongside Alice Braga, Salli Richardson, and Charlie Tahan.
