MGM’s “Robocop” reboot just got classed up tons. Gary Oldman is the second actor to signed onto the sci-fi remake, set to be directed by Jose Padilha with “The Killing’s” Joel Kinnaman playing Alex Murphy, Detroit’s finest cop turned Detroit’s finest cyborg cop after a mishap with, er, some guys with guns left him near death. I hear you get extra hazard pay for being near-death, but I could be wrong.
Oldman will play Norton, the scientist who creates Robocop to be the ultimate law enforcement machine, and who “finds himself torn between the ideals of the machine trying to rediscover its humanity and the callous needs of a corporation.”
That callous corporation would be OCP (or Omni Consumer Products to its investors), since it would be nearly unthinkable to not include OCP in the reboot. I mean, they could, of course, but it might be like taking away Batman’s butler Alfred. It just wouldn’t be right.
After lots of delay, it looks like MGM will finally get the reboot moving very soon, with Toronto locales likely standing in for a near-future, crime-riddled Detroit. Look for “Robocop” to uphold the law one scumbag at a time in Summer 2013.
