Gawk at Four Minutes of Green Lantern WonderCon Footage

Warner Bros. apparently brought out the heavy hitters for WonderCon this weekend. Besides the fresh new poster, they also showed a select number of scenes from the upcoming sci-fi/comic book movie, including probably your best and most extensively look at the entire Green Lantern Corp. And man, there are apparently LOTS of GLs out there, too. Check out the WonderCon footage below. Via Apple.

In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan. Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before. But Hal is clearly the missing piece to the puzzle, and along with his determination and willpower, he has one thing no member of the Corps has ever had: humanity. With the encouragement of fellow pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), if Hal can quickly master his new powers and find the courage to overcome his fears, he may prove to be not only the key to defeating Parallax…he will become the greatest Green Lantern of all.

Starring Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Temuera Morrison, Jenna Craig, Jon Tenney, Tim Robbins, Angela Bassett, Taika Cohen, Jeff Wolfe and directed by Martin Campbell.

The corp goes hardcore June 17, 2011.

Cool Stories From Zergnet

  • B-Flash

Now that my friends is what we needed to see, the only problem I had was the CG and now that most of it is MUCH better then the trailer im happy.

  • Punisher

    movie looks pretty sick

  • Shazam!

That’s what I’ve been looking for since they announced this sucker! Booya!

  • VALYDP

great trailer…but does anyone remember that awful LEGEND OF THE SUPERHEROES
aired on NBC-TV with adam west’s batman with green lantern including captain -
marvel from SHAZAM!(?) of course, gl had even appeared on the SUPERFRIENDS
    Cartoon from the late 70′s.

  • Marc Ohhhh

I swear to god that Abin Sur looks like Zordon.

  • Juggernaut

What a mixed bag that was! Hal’s suit is whack. I’m sorry but it is. While the overall quality of this extended look at the film far surpassed the original bush league trailer, it is a far cry from good. The above poster is cool. Then there is the CGI that is so flawed that it’s almost hokey looking in some shots. Reynolds’ schtick is awful. Then again the Or scenes and the space sequences looked pretty good and Mark Strong’s Sinestro looks like he will steal every scene. I can’t get a good sense of Hector Hammond’s character within this clip either. He will be a major character and I’m not quite sure how he’ll figure into the whole story. It does however, look as though we’ll be seeing quite a few cameos of the other GL corps members and maybe a prelude to the yellow, Sinestro Corp. I hope that there is either a scene with Sinestro sporting the classic blue and black styled outfit. That and cameos or references to Guy Gardner or John Stewart will be highlights for me if included. There were some high points in there but overall I’m still very underwhelmed with this. I really think that on the whole this is just wrong. Reynolds should be playing Deadpool for Marvel, not changing one of DC’s characters into super-Van Wilder. Even The Flash would have been a better fit for him. I’ll still see it and hope to be proven wrong but I have a sneaking suspicion that all of my fears will be founded.

Looks great and seriously, I don´t know what problems some people have with the CGI? I don´t think it´s a problem about the effects being good or bad as much as it appeals on an artistic level to them. I guess every time you have to create a whole universe, characters, planets, costumes and so on using effects, it looks great to some and cheesy and horrible to others, no matter if it´s stop-motion animation, prothetics or CGI.
BTW, who´s Deadpool and who cares? ;-)

  • Lexavi80

@Juggernaut: I agree with you 100%. This trailer looks way better than the previous one, but I still have problems with a bunch of stuff. The biggest would be Ryan Reynolds.

I like the guy. I really do. I think he’ll be a great Deadpool or a great Wally West. I think he was misscast as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern though. Reading the comics I always picture Hal Jordan being like a pilot with a James Bond attitud. Funny, but not a clown, you know what I mean?.

The other thing is that, although there’s better CGI in these scenes I think the mix between human with CGI (and some awful cable work) is still demanding attention. The close up on Killowog was lame too.

Anyway, I hope this one is also work in progress.

    • Juggernaut

That was exactly what I’m talking about. I always saw Hal more like Nathan Fillion’s character in Firefly. Funny and charming but also a cool, calm leader. yan Reynolds wouldn’t have been on my short list of guys to play GL. Like tou said Wally West in a Flash franchise would have been a good fit. Or of course the role that he was born to play, Deadpool. What’s done is done and I really hope that his performance isn’t all Van Wilder. Maybe his character will start off as a smarmy, wise ass, goofball and develop into what I have always envisioned Hal as being. Only time will tell. As for the CGI and effects, the main problem seems to be the almost cartoonish look of the alien races. I suppose that is inevitable when trying to create such a vast galaxy of characters for a film but it just misses the mark for me. Like I said, I will go see this and hope to be proven wrong.

      • Shazam!

Well sir, since you wouldn’t let me off on my comments about the Captain America teaser I’m not going to let you off here! : )

It sounds like you’ve got a bit of a marvel prejudice because most of what you’re saying about GL you were defending in regards to Captain America and the new X-Men flick.

It also sounds like you’re not that much of a Reynolds fan (kind of like I’m not a Chris Evans fan) and that your response to Reynolds (oath scene, etc.) is the same as mine with Evans ducking behind his shield.

I’ll be honest – I’m a huge Green Lantern fan… and I loved what the trailer showed! I realize that none of the fx shots are done yet, but I still love where they’re going with the costume being energy instead of fabric. The alien GL’s look great in my opinion – the comics have always provided us with a wide variety of giant-eye-balled, crystal bodied, reptilian creatures, robots, etc. and the trailer delivered. I also like the way they’ve made efforts to ensure that aliens have bodies that aren’t human.

I’m loving the “space opera” thing they’ve got going on – I got chills during the “We are the Chore” chant… I’m excited to see the final product!

        • Punisher

Shazam! i totally agree with you i think this movie looks pretty bad ass. This was not the easiest character to make a movie on but they have so much in it that looks good cgi thats not finished will not ruin this movie for me neither will stupid little quotes that are just inevitable at this point this movie has such a crazy look to it i cant wait to see it on the big screen. I think this movie will out beat x-men first class and thor which iam also very excited to see

        • Juggernaut

Fair enough. Lol. You know, you may be right. I might lean abit more toward Marvel overall. That is a fair statement. However the only reason that I am is the poor quality of projects that DC and WB have released. Not all Marvel endevors are perfect but so far the Marvel produced films (Ironman, The Incredible Hulk, Ironman 2 and now Thor and Captain America:TFA) seem to be on the money. I might be playing favorites but there is reason for that. As far as the similarities between my distain for Ryan Reynolds and yours for Chris Evans I think that Reynolds is clearly veering too far from the character archetype. There are a few scenes in the CA trailer that may come across as not being “CAP” worthy. On the other hand, nearly every scene of Reynolds as Hal is un- Hal! We could debate this all day. The bottom line is we will both be going to see both of these movies on opening day and hoping for the best. Until then we’ll agree to disagree. Lol.

          • Shazam!

Good stuff – glad to see that there are people out there who know how to disagree without calling eachother names!

Again – with my prejudice well in hand – I don’t have an issue with Reynolds in the trailer. If the lines says he makes up an oath, then I can’t really imagine Nathan Fillion doing it any different!

I have to say that the biggest thing I’m excited about for GL is the story. From day one when the studio starting talking about what were going to see they started referring to the story arc of the film (…this is what happens by Act II, etc.) and that is awesome to hear! Half of the movies being made in Hollywood today have no sense of story arc and they’ve talked at length about the change we see in Hal Jordon throughout the movie. Frankly, I’d be surprised if a character was exposed the things that he was (aliens, other planets, super powers) and didn’t change at all.

Bottom line – I totally agree with you in that I’m going to see ALL of these films this summer – this is the summer for movies I have dreamed about all my life – the only question is whether or not I blow-up Fox by September or not.

Ulik, Juggernaut, TSTI and a few others are really good at that. We’ve become wuite the bedating and collaborative group. LOL. There are lots more of course, but there are even more immature ones out there that love to start crap cause they disagree.

          • Juggernaut

I see what your saying. And to be totally honest Reynolds isn’t that bad of an actor. I was just hoping he would bring more of his performance from Ammittyville Horror or Buried to the role, the darker more serious side rather than the goofy Van Wilder, Waiting type characterization. I agree totally about the story. If they do the story right, have Hal on his heroes quest defeating Parralax setting up Sinestro as the villain for the second film and finishing the trilogy with Carrol becoming Star Sapphire! Obviously there will be more to it than that but you get the idea. As far as this being the summer of movies absolutely! As a matter of fact the next two to three years will be epic. And although I was hoping that Fox and Sony would relinquish the rights to the Marvel properties that was always just wishful thinking. There is no way that any subsidary company would let that happen. X-Men:First Class, Green lantern, Thor, Captain America:TFA. Then we have another Ghost Rider film. The next Nolan batman film. The new Superman. The new Spider-Man. Ironman 3. The Avengers. The new Daredevil. It is insane!

Okay my turn to weigh in-

I’m gonna have to side with Shazam! on this one. I’m a HUGE GL fan. I’d have to say next to Deadpool, he’s definitely one of my favs. I was slightly underwhelmed by the teaser trailer, but wasn’t condeming it as alot was still being done. This one by far exceeds my expectations. As Shazam! said they threw in alot of alien Corps members and did a great job at bringing them to life and making them more realistic. I could even name some of them when I saw them! Also digging the way the suit looks and is handled, because it IS a contruct of the ring and not fabric, and the fact that it basically becomes a second skin was a nice touch.

But as Shazam! said Juggy my boy, you’re doing the same thing he did. Context makes all the difference. And I dunno, he seems like Hal to me. I slightly younger less serious Hal, but that’s to be expected. You’re again going by the comics which has hd years to establish the character and his personality, but we’re seeing him before all the crap that turned him so serious. It’d be like reading old DD comics compared to the recetn ones. Yeah he’s always had his share of darkness but the charatcer used to be a bit more fun too. But since then his career has had more downs than ups and that takes it’s toll. SO too does seeing your home town destroyed as well as being driven slightly insane and killing people you cared for. Coming back from that makes Hal a different person, and yet he still cracks wise. Also look at “First Flight,” Chris Meloni’s Hal was wise cracking from the opening til the end, but he was still serious. i think Reynolds can do this just as well as I think EVans can with Cap. So like you I’m going to just step back and we’ll pick this up after the release.

    • Juggernaut

see now you guys are talking me into liking this! Lol. If Reynolds can convey the more stern side of Hal, after he is hardened by the events of the first film and all, I will bite. Sure he is amazed by the ring and the impossible circumstances and that is cool and all. I just don’t like the goofy stuff. Now onto the suit. If it does come off better in the film it will be very effective. The idea is cool. From what I’ve seen though it doesn’t look good. I would have liked to have had it, as someone remarked “like a black hole”, it would have been really awsome. The green part looks good but a bit too bright I think. Either way I’ll be checking it out and hopefully you guys are right and I am wrong.

  • Punisher

1 question is that monster cloud looking thing parallax

    • Juggernaut

That is what I was thinking too.
