Geoffrey Rush Speaks Out About Pirates of the Caribbean

Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides (2011) Movie — By Jacob on September 24, 2009

Pirates of the Caribbean at the moment could not be on stranger tides. Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom have departed for other opportunities. Johnny Depp expressed remorse at the departure of Walt Disney Studios Chairman Dick Cook, explaining that there was a “fissure” in his enthusiasm for the film. And Geoffrey Rush seems unaware of what’s happening.

In an interview with MTV, Rush seemed to be on board and ready to shoot next spring, so that he could reprise his role as Captain Barbossa, but didn’t know much beyond that. Rush told MTV:

“They’re waiting for the screenplay writers to put together something that’s beyond the trilogy, take it off into a new direction so that it’s fresh and hopefully really interesting for an audience, that they’re not going to just sausage-machine out something else, which wouldn’t be so good.”

The film is presumably based on the 1988 novel “On Stranger Tides” by Tim Powers, but no details have been announced beside the Fountain of Youth angle. The production of the previous pirate films also had that extemporaneous feel that this one is steadily compiling at its shores. Director Rob Marshall, who replaces  departed Gore Verbinski, is mostly known for musicals such as the Broadway production of “Cabaret” and the film “Chicago”, so perhaps he can bring the kind of management and care that seemed lacking from the last two Pirate films.

Oh good, because apart from Depp’s Captain Jack, Rush’s Captain Barbossa was the best thing about the series, and I wasn’t even aware at how much I missed him until the he showed up again at the end of the second movie. I just about jumoed outta my seat cheering. I look forward to more wayward adventures with the bickering Cpatains of the Black Pearl.

  • Jacob says:

Bloom and Knightley were kind of dead weight at this point anyway. The writing couldn’t sustain their characters, and they don’t have the sort of flamboyance that makes the pirate roles so good. Anyway, the last two films were kind of “off” for whatever reason. The jokes and craziness that worked in Black Pearl fell short. The timing didn’t work. Keeping Sparrow and Barbossa is a good thing, I think, as long as they have something more than the useless double crossings and spectacles that pervaded World’s End and Dead Man’s Chest.

How about shoot Jack into space – that would be different.
