Yesterday Variety revealed that Johnny Depp had signed his soul over to Disney and had agreed to front some pretty big movies, including a return to the fourth installment of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise and a starring role as Tonto in Jerry Bruckheimer’s “Lone Ranger” big screen adaptation. Naturally, if Depp is playing Tonto, then who will be assaying the part of the mysterious masked man himself? How about George Clooney? That’s what someone who may or may not work in the industry who may or may not know anyone in the know (maybe) told AICN. Or at least, they say Clooney has “shown interest” in the part.
Thusly written via AICN:
Word as of now is that George Clooney has shown a lot of interest in the role of the Lone Ranger, and the studio’s been talking to him about it. Previously it was rumored that Nic Cage was up for the role, but that rumor died a long time ago. Clooney’s name has come up quite a number of times since.
Isn’t George Clooney a little too gray and too paunchy to play the Lone Ranger? I thought the Lone Ranger was a young guy who as an up-and-coming Texas Ranger who got ambushed, nearly killed, and decided to become a vigilante? If Bruckheimer hires someone like Clooney, wouldn’t the movie end up being a big campy adventure flick? Oh wait, nevermind.
