I'm reasonably certain Avalon had a big budget for a Japanese film, diceman. At least, big (or big enough) by Asian film industry standards. There's just nothing worst than a low-budget or moderately budgeted movie doing VR.

"I always look at virtual reality-based movies this way: if you got the budget for it, go for it; if not, leave it to the big Hollywood movies."

Hmm, don't really agree with this one. Just think of "Avalon", that polish/japanese Co-Production. In my opinion it's an awesome SF-Movie. Maybe, with a higher budget, they could have made another "Matrix" out of it, an all-out slam-bang action-fest, but they didn't. Instead they rather focused on plot and characters and a more "human" way of telling the story, thus creating a very fascinating piece of art, and still managed to include some fine SFX. And I really love that omnipresent soundtrack by Kenji Kawai; it provides me with goosebumps all over.

Just think of "Ghost in the shell" as a real-life movie with some highly stylized sepia-visuals, a more philosophical approach to things, plus a mind-blowing, yet surprisingly quiet showdown.
