Giovanni Ribisi Enlists in The Gangster Squad

You can add Giovanni Ribisi to the ever-growing and very impressive list of actors joining “Zombieland” director Ruben Fleischer’s period crime film “The Gangster Squad”. Ribisi, who will probably be most familiar to the average moviegoing fan as the smarmy bureaucratic douche in James Cameron’s “Avatar”, joins a cast that already includes Sean Penn, playing gangster Mickey Cohen, who butts heads with 1949 L.A. coppers Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin as they attempt to keep the mob out of the City of Angels.

Anthony Mackie, Bryan Cranston, and Michael Pena are also onboard the film.

I am still curious to see how Fleischer approaches the material — whether it’ll be a gritty crime drama, or something lighter, given Fleischer’s two previous feature film credits, “Zombieland” and the upcoming “30 Minutes or Less”, both comedies. If he is going for a lighter flick, maybe the cops will wear hats and call themselves “The Hat Squad”…
