I don’t mind telling you, Dustin Nguyen’s “Once Upon a Time in Vietnam” is one of my more heavily anticipated films of 2013. I’ve already seen the other one — Wong Kar Wai’s “The Grandmaster”. Now I’m itching to get a look at “Once Upon a Time in Vietnam”. The two films have martial arts in common, but other than that, I don’t expect them to be very similar at all, which is a good thing.
You’ve already seen trailers for the film (here, in case you missed it), now check out a cool 30-minute behind-the-scenes featurette that gets into the nitty and gritty of shooting a Vietnamese martial arts epic with an International cast and crew where everyone speaks a different language. Don’t worry, English subtitles are aplenty.
The film stars Dustin Nguyen (“The Rebel”) as a mysterious stranger who is enlisted by residents of a small village to take on a criminal organization, led by the dastardly Roger Yuan (the Fiendish Dr. Wu from “Black Dynamite” himself). Thanh Van Ngo plays the love interest.
The film opens in Vietnam this month, but no word on an overseas release date yet.
UPDATE: Added the third part.
