From monsters to spaceship and lasers and The Force.

Director Gareth Edwards, coming off the worldwide hit “Godzilla,” is parlaying his monster mashing skills into a “Star Wars” gig, with Lucasfilm and Disney officially announcing that Edwards will helm one of their stand-alone movies, though which one–and who it’ll star–was not revealed.

Says Edwards about landing the gig:

Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life – join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited and honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm.

Mission accomplished!

Edwards will direct the untitled, unknown film–the multiple movies are said to “offer new stories beyond the core Saga”–from a script by “Book of Eli’s” Gary Whitta, with the movie expected out as early as December 16, 2016. That’s pretty fast for a movie this big, which makes you wonder if Edwards has been attached for some time but somehow managed to keep it quiet. Hey, anything’s possible.

So, any clues as to which character Edwards’ stand-alone movie will star?

This guy, perhaps?
