POTENTIAL SPOILERS BELOW
It seems a week doesn’t go by that we don’t get news or rumors that another character has been added to Marc Webb’s “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” who will end up battling Spidey either in the upcoming sequel or is being set up to suit up in future sequels. It doesn’t help that Sony has already greenlit and dated two more installments after part 2.
The latest Spidey news and rumors involve British actress Felicity Jones’ character. Earlier speculations have Jones playing Felicia Hardy, aka the Black Cat, Spider-Man’s sometimes love interest (the Catwoman to his Batman, if you will). Jones herself seemed to confirm this recently.
Turns out, not so much. (Though it’s possible she just didn’t know who she was playing back then. It’s not unheard of with big movies like this.) Talking with something called View London, she now has this to say about her role in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”:
It’s all quite shrouded in secrecy, but I’m the Goblin’s girlfriend – I’m in a relationship with him, and his accomplice. I’m on the dark side.
So does this character have a name?
I can’t say actually. It’s all in the vaults of Marvel. I love all that secrecy, I think it’s great. It builds anticipation, there’s too much transparency in everything these days.
So there you go. NOT Felicia Hardy aka The Black Cat. Then who?
The Playlist speculates it could be a character name Lily Hollister, the girlfriend of the comic book Harry Osborn (to be played by Dane DeHaan in the movie) aka the Green Goblin. Hollister herself eventually gets powers and becomes a villain calling herself Menace (pictured below). It’s comic books, EVERYONE gets powers.
My guess is Jones’ character doesn’t actually become Menace, and is just Osborn’s girlfriend. At this point, with rumors of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” setting up a throwdown with the Sinister Six (featuring, as the name implies, six villains), adding one more is just way, WAY overkill.
But we’ll find out for sure when “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”, starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Watson, Jamie Foxx and Paul Giamatti opens in theaters next year, May 2, 2014.
