Gordon-Levitt in Talks to Re-Join Nolan and Hardy on The Dark Knight Rises

Looks like Christopher Nolan is getting the “Inception” boys back together. Or, anyway, two of the boys (if you don’t count Michael Caine as Alfred, that is). First he got Tom Hardy to play Bane, and now Nolan is in the process of adding Joseph Gordon-Levitt in an as-yet-unknown role by the time production on the third “Batman” film begins sometime this Spring.

Gordon-Levitt will be joining the returning Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne aka Batman and newcomers Anne Hathaway as Catwoman and the aforementioned Hardy as Bane.

Look for the Bat to rise again in 2012.

Pleeeeeeeease don’t let it be Robin….

    Robin?

    • Steakger-397

He could be, considering Bale said this would probably be his last Batman film. Maybe the story will follow the same as the comic where Bane ‘broke’ Batman and Azrael took over?

  • Juggernaut

It could be so many different possibilities that it would be futile to speculate…but I will anyway!!! Azrael was my first thought. I hope it isn’t Robin, but if done right, he would be a kick ass Nightwing in future installments. I’d also like to see him show up as pre-Hush Thomas Elliot. We all know the slippery slope that is a three villain comic movie, however, Hathaway will be playing Selina Kyle, no mention of Catwoman, so there is a chance that she will be ommited as a villain in this film. Having Hush orchestrate the entire film would be epic. I’d also like to see him as Black Mask or even Hugo Strange. I know that Nolan has expressed in interviews that he would not bring The Joker back. That being said, I’ve been of the opinion that Levitt is a dead ringer for his 10 Things I hate about you co-star Ledger. Given the right circumstances, a Joker reprisal by Levitt would be great! Levitt is so good he could litterally pull off any of these choices. I leave it in the extremely capable hands of this generations greatest director, Christopher Nolan.

Doubtful it’s Azrael, as they’d have alot to cover in one film. Not gonna break, replace, and return Batman in 2hrs. As for Tommy Elliot/Hush, I like that and he fits the part, but that said also doubtful. And Joker is not happening. Nolan said he woudln’t so I’m thinking out of respect he’s sticking to that. He’d be an interesting Hugo Strange, Riddler and I think he’d play a great Question…but that’s also very doubtful. Well until it’s announced I’m not gonna play the guessing game as this could go on forever.

      • Juggernaut

Your right, but it’s so much fun! I think that with the way TDK left off and Nolan’s exclusion of Riddler, Robin and Joker, only Hush and Hugo Strange are the best bets. I’d like to see people like Question but along the Nolanverse quidelines he may be hard to translate to film. Having Crispus Allen and Renee Montoya show up as part of Gordon’s anti-Batman task force would be cool cameos!

        • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool

I was actually thinking Bullock and Montoya. But yeah agreed!

          • Juggernaut

Bullock is too close to Flass from Begins. They both are reminiscent of Eckhardt from Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman. Flass was in Year One and came before both so I guess that was why they went with his charcter for Begins. They could do Bullock though since his character isn’t corrupt just hates Batman for his vigilanteism.

          • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool

Exactly, and he doesn’t hate Batman just doesn’t appreciate him making the cops look bad, but that’s after the police deptartment becomes loses most of its corruption. SO I think Either Allen or Bullock would work. They played the character like that in “Gotham Knights,” have a similar arc for Bullock where he’s anti-Batman until he gets saved by Bats, but is still against how he makes the cops look useless, but agrees he’s needed.

  • Juggernaut

The task force could be comprised of Gordon, obviously. Essen, who has been rumored to be in. Crispus Allen, Bullock and Montoya with Dr Hugo Strange hired as a psyciatric consultant, played by Levitt!!!

G-R-E-A-T!!!!!. I really like Gordon Levitt’s work so far. He’s a great actor. I do wonder who he will play.
Robin?. Doesn’t sound so bad to me. Let’s all remember… this is CHRISTOPHER NOLAN!!!. If he decide to include Dick Grayson or Tim Drake he probably will do it without the character putting green and yellow spandex. He maybe make the character youngster with combat training that’s driven by the Batman mythos. Maybe one of his copy-cats from Dark Knight that decided to work his own way, and obviously, Batman can’t get rid off.
It occurs to me a MILLION ways to introduce the character.
Anyway, I don’t think JGL will play Robin anyway. Maybe Profesor Milo?

    • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool

No one is saying that Robin is a bad idea, but that Nolan has stated on numerous occaisions Robin is a no go for his world.

  • B-Flash

It’s so nice to see people talk about this stuff, I’ll just wait until it’s announced as to who he’s playing, because i’m still LMAO at the reaction to Hardy playing Bane and not Hugo Strange, I mean all the news we got about “TDNR” were just rumours so I don’t understand why people got so upset to no Strange.

By the way did anyone see Bane in Young Justice?

    • Juggernaut

Y’know I was one of those bone heads that got mad when it was released that Hardy was Bane and not Strange. It took some time for me to get over the fact that The Riddler was out. Then the news hit of Strange. At first I wasn’t sold. After a few days I was eating it up. It just seemed to me that Strange was the next logical step from the end of TDK. Same thing with Talia. I heard about them trying to cast her and said to myself, “yeah! That would work! It would tie the trilogy up.” But then the news of Hathaway as Selina Kyle. Now I don’t know if Nolan will or will not include Robin in the third film. Obviously stranger things have happened! Lol. One thing is for sure. If he does Robin it will be Dick Grayson. Nolan is a purest. He wouldn’t jump straight from no Robin to Jason Todd or Tim Drake. He could introduce Robin and make him cool. It is Christopher Nolan after all. He revamps characters and their transformations but not yet has he strayed from continuity or chronology of the Batman mythos.

      • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool

Yes if he were to use Robin it’d be Dick Grayson, and I think he’d go the route that Schumaker (wisely) went in Batman Forever and age him up to his late teens (even though Chris O’Donell looked 25). But Yeah I don’t think he’ll use him. And yeah he’s strayed not much but a little, but I’ve liked the side trips. In comics Gordon’s child is Barbara and in the films he has a daughter who seems to always be hidden, but his son (who I never knew existed) is front and center, Lucius knows he’s Batman, but that was only hinted at in comics (and then copied in “The Batman”), but thats it really.

        • Juggernaut

He also changed two-Face’s transformation, for the better, but still changed. He did the ol’ switcheroo with Ducard and Al Ghul which you mentioned below. Created the Rachel Dawes character too. All of those were an improvement and necessary to translate the materia to a functional movie world. If they did go the dual role route with Levitt playing both Bane and Strange that wouldn’t make much sense. That being said, I’m on board with Nolan’s vision…whatever it is! Lol. I’d like a complete swerve and to have Levitt play The Riddler after all! That would be awsome.

Bane in YJ was great. But I’m not mad, I don’t think anyone was, more confused as he fit the Hugo Strange character better. That said does anyone remember back when “Begins” was being cast and Liam Neeson was cast as Ra’s Al Ghul. Then a month later he was playing Henri Ducard. And THEN it turned out that in the end he was both. Hmmmss. I don’t think they’d go that route with Strange and Bane but still.

Yeah I don’t think there gonna do that, it would be funny if they did.

YJ Bane was great because even though it was a cartoon he was still a realistic size before and after his venom boost, which just make me wanna see TDNR so much more.

I believe Nolan should rename this film from the Dark Knight Rises to something let’s say like The Caped Crusader Rises. The Dark Knight part in the title feels redundant after part 2.

    • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool

I said the same thing. I think retro naming stuff is bad BUT i thought this would be great for renaming the trilogy.

      Batman Begins
The Fall of The Dark Knight
      Rise of the Caped Crusader

      • Juggernaut

That would have been the way to go.

        • Juggernaut

What about Levitt playing Alfberto Falcone. I always had Adrien Brody or Crispin Glover pegged for that character but it’s possible.

          • http://www.originalgeekspodcast.com/ Dedpool

That would work. It would bring it full circle to the first movie, and establish a connection and validate Selina being in it (illegitamite daughter of Carmine and all). He’d be a major part but not a major villain. And since no one said he was playing a villain it works. Funny thing though, all this talk about him possibly being Robin, I always thought he’d make a good choice even back in his “Third Rock” days.

          • Juggernaut

He’d be a great voice actor for Robin or Nightwing! That said, I really like Jesse McCartney voicing Robin in Young Justice. While I could see Levitt as Alberto, I’d still like see him as a larger character. Although, his role in Inception was a supporting role and I found his character highly entertaining.

Collider is reporting a rumor that has already been pulled from the original source.
