Gordon-Levitt in Talks to Re-Join Nolan and Hardy on The Dark Knight Rises

Looks like Christopher Nolan is getting the “Inception” boys back together. Or, anyway, two of the boys (if you don’t count Michael Caine as Alfred, that is). First he got Tom Hardy to play Bane, and now Nolan is in the process of adding Joseph Gordon-Levitt in an as-yet-unknown role by the time production on the third “Batman” film begins sometime this Spring.

Gordon-Levitt will be joining the returning Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne aka Batman and newcomers Anne Hathaway as Catwoman and the aforementioned Hardy as Bane.

Look for the Bat to rise again in 2012.

@ Juggernaut- I too found Arthur a very fun and entertaining character in “Inception,” he and Eames both. But yeah i’d love him in a larger role as well.

As for McCartney as Robin, I’m liking him too, I wasn’t too sure at first but he’s definitely pullin it off. I agree JGL would be a kick ass Robin or Nightwing voice. As much as I loved Neil Patrick Harris as Nightwing in “Under the Red Hood” I kept hearing Spidey from the MTV series, and JGL woulda done it just as well.

Hey guys, all of you have great ideas! As much as I don’t want to see Robin, I have to say that if Catwoman is in this and this is Nolan’s LAST Batman movie then I’d say I’m feeling 90% that JGL is Robin in some capacity. Since Robin is such an iconic character, he really couldn’t be left out of a true ending of a Batman theatrical arc without introducing him in some way. JGL is a great actor and Nolan has incredible talent and vision so I don’t see them going wrong that combo for a well appreciated version of Robin. This could be the GREATEST version of Robin ever seen if that happens. We may even still be up for more INREDIBLE and UNPREDICTABLE surprises as this movie has’nt even begun to start filming yet.

The thing is, with this being Nolan’s “Last” foray into the Batman lore there is a lot of story to tell. The question then becomes what has to be in there. Robin is an essential part of Batman. But so is Penguin, Poison Ivy, Riddler, Mr. Freeze, etc. I think that as long as Nolan tells a compelling story all is well. Some characters unfortunately will be left out. Then again, in a few years WB may want another director to pick up where Nolan leaves off. They may even re-boot the franchise after Nolan’s final film. I say tell a Batman story. If some characters being left out is the worst thing that happens then were okay. Too many nods, cameos and characters may actually do more harm than good.

Both you and Juggernaut have great points. I agree that if he does it Nolan will make Robin cool. I also agree that should he not be included it wouldn’t hurt the film or the franchise at all. I think the character is an important part of the mythos, but also one that can be left out. However if anyone were gonna do it and do it right it’s Nolan.

      • Juggernaut

I agree completely. Let’s face it, when the character of Robin was created it was a feasable idea that a young kid, after having his acrobat family slain by the mafia could be appointed to a billionaire, bachelor and live as his ward. That was in 1940 and it was a comic book!!!! Lol. This is 2011 and a movie. Big difference. There would need to be some kind of drastic changes made to the character to be realistic. For one his entire family story needs to go. Circus acrobats?!?!? Really??? His age would need to be altered to the elder side just for him to be able to do the things that would need to be done (martial arts, weapons, etc.) Since there were already copycat Batmen in TDK I could see him being a fellow vigilante that was inspired by Batman after his family died at the hands of the mafia… that would work. Like you said if anyone can make it good it is Nolan.

I know you already read and responded to it but I thought I’d repost that Robin idea here:
Lexavi80 wrote in response to the Bucky pic: “That’s the exact same direction Chris Nolan ought to take in DKR. He should cast Joseph Gordon Levitt to play Dick Grayson, a combat trained youngster whom is motivated by Batman’s mythos but doesn’t really wear the tights in the film.”

I took the idea a little further and responded: “I actually like that idea to a point. I’d have Dick have gone to military school after his parents died in the circus accident, and he became a troubled youth. At 17 he’s emancipated from the circus (who were his legal guardians) and moves back to Gotham and hears about Batman. Wanting to find out more about his parent’s death he finds Batman and approaches him for help. Batman says he’ll do what he can, but that isn’t good enough for Grayson and he starts to follow Batman on patrol. Batman relents finally and agrees to help him if he lets him train Dick…and the rest is history.”

To flesh it out even more, I’d have him be a martial arts and parkour enthusiast (stemming from his love of acrobatics and the adrenaline rush from it), who looks up to Batman for taking the city back from the crime that plagues it and took his family as a child. Batman would see the rage in him and offer him the opportunity to avenge their deaths if he can channel that rage into detirmination and quest for justice, not vengeance.

            I like it.

I would have gone with Batman’s Big Adventure or Three Villians and A Batman, or something along those lines. In fact, why even have a reference to Batman in the title? Call it something like Ming Lees Hong Kong Adventures In America “A” Number One Super Fun Time.

I understand Nolan wanting to recycle actors that he has worked with but I would have chosen Javier Bardem as BANE over Tom Hardy and if there was enough room, I would have chosen Tom Hardy to play as Hush.

  • Stevevans666

I know for a fact that he will play Robin

@Nix- This is why i didn’t send it to you. I just though Juggy would want to see it. But you are absolutely right.

Yeah, I like CBM’s enthusiasm for the genre, but their “anyone can post news” system is rife with problems. For instance, I always chuckle when I see something about “Kevin Pennington” on their site.
