Grab Your Tommy Guns! It’s the First Trailer for The Gangster Squad

I love me some period cop movies, especially the ones set in the first half of the 20th century. We’re talking about gangsters in flowing trench coats, stylish fedoras, hot-to-trot femme fatales, and oh yeah, a complete lack of restraints when it comes to spraying those Tommy Guns. And this trailer for “Zombieland” director Reuben Flesicher’s “The Gangster Squad” (or are they just going with “Gangster Squad” here?) completely blows me away.

Set in 1949 Los Angeles, “The Gangster Squad” finds a gang of cops forming to take on East Coast gangster Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn). How do they take the ruthless gangster down? Any friggin’ way they can, that’s how, preferably involving the wanton unleashing of those previously mentioned Tommy Guns.

I have to say, I think Fleischer might have seen “Drive”, because Ryan Gosling’s role in this one sure looks and feels like his role in the Nicolas Winding Refn movie. I’m going out on a ledge here, but I’m betting Gosling’s trigger-happy cop will easily overshadow Josh Brolin’s brooding, serious-as-a-heart-attack main character. The fact that Gosling is rolling around with Emma Stone sure don’t hurt none.

Starring Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Nick Nolte, Robert Patrick, Michael Peña, Giovanni Ribisi, Anthony Mackie, Emma Stone, Sean Penn, and directed by Ruben Fleischer.

Originally scheduled for October 19, 2012, that release date might have changed.
