Grayskull aka He-man aka Masters of the Universe Gets New Writer

The last time we heard about Warner Bros.’ live-action take on He-Man Masters of the Universe, it was the announcement that John Stevenson (“Kung Fu Panda”) had been hired to direct. The script for the movie, now apparently just going by the title “Grayskull”, has gone through a few screenwriters, including go-to comic book guy Justin Marks, and it’s now landed in the lap of newcomer Evan Daugherty, whose only credit is an unproduced screenplay called “Shrapnel”. So, er, I guess that isn’t really a credit, since it’s unproduced and all. Anyways.

Says THR about the WB’s take on the movie:

Warners sees the big-screen version as a gritty fantasy and reimagines Adam as a soldier who sets off to find his destiny, happening upon the magical world of Eternia. There, Skeletor has raised a technological army and is bent on eradicating magic.

No wonder they’re changing the title to “Grayskull”. That description doesn’t sound like a He-Man movie at all. Then again, a He-Man movie ala the cartoons would be pretty silly, almost as silly as that live-action Dolph Lundgren version.

Warner Bros. and Silver Pictures are producing.

Below: In case you forgot about the cartoon, here’s a reminder.

I dunno. The thing is Skeletor was always the magic user, and most of the Masters(He-Man, Man-at-Arms-, etc) were just soldiers who employed technology and their innate abilities to fight evil. Switching it up is kinda backwards. I mean the Adam from another plantet thing I can deal with and even get behind. It’s kinda harkening back to when Adam’s mother was from Earth, and the old Buck Rogers, man out of time/space thing. But I think the world should have almost been destroyed by a bttle using magic decades ago and Skeletor was banished/trapped as a result. And the world has since moved on to technology from fear the use of magic may bring back the evil. Throw in the Sorceress as the sole magical being who transports Adam, the hero of prophecy to Eternia to help vanquish a returning evil. Blah, blah, blah, gets magic sword that channels power of former hero/king Grayskull and viola a decent He-Man movie. I want credit for this. LOL

Is it just me or does this sound more like a She-Ra movie. The horde was into the tech stuff not Skeletor. They really just need to give up on some of this stuff. He-Man could be a great flick if they got someone to do justice to it. Sure you’d have to retool it a bit. The series on Cartoon Network a few years ago was a pretty good retooling. Go that route as opposed to making it into something like Universal Soldier. Hollywood needs to get some fresh ideas instead of rebooting everything. Sheesh.

This doesn’t sound like MOTU. We need someone that knows the world of MOTU to create this movie. Stop screwing around with the formula! To make this movie work we just need to keep the origins of each character in tact, make it darker and it will work. The 2002 Cartoon Network series was great. It took all the elements from the classic, gave it a more serious twist to it and it was a very entertaining cartoon. The same can be done with a new movie. Warner Bros. what are you waiting for?!

Well I read two reviews of Grayskull by Justin Marks, and it had some good ideas and I liked where they were going with it, and it was an EARLY script. But I think WB is pulling back from that script because of how Steet Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li did, which he penned. But who knows. I liked what I read. Check it out at cc2k.us

I thought the whole idea of making a movie was to attract the fans who supported the franchise and who would ultimately support a movie release while increasing interest from a new generation. But it is obvious they are not interested in the success of this movie and are trying to make it something which it is not and none of the fans will support.
Skeletor’s main power is magic so why would he be trying to eradicate it.
Clearly they have no understanding of the original characters as Prince Adam was clearly no soldier and avoided confrontations at every opertunity. Please consider what made the series a success in the first place when writing a script. The new adaptation was a good introduction and would have been a good basis to go by.
