Great Caesar’s Ghost! Laurence Fishburne is Perry White in Man of Steel

Perry White is no longer white. Heh. Get it? Because his name is White, and the character has been traditionally white in every incarnation? Well, not anymore.

Signalling that their Superman movie will indeed buck the trend (I guess that’s one interpretation), Zack Snyder and company have cast “The Matrix’s” Morpheus aka Laurence Fishburne to play the new Perry White in their upcoming “Man of Steel”.

Like J.J. Jonah to Spider-Man, Perry White is the publisher of The Daily Planet, the newspaper where Clark Kent (Superman) and Lois Lane works. He’s also known for his trademark phrase, “Great Caesar’s Ghost!” Cause, you know, he’s an old fart and whatnot, and apparently old farts say stuff like that. Or something.

It’s a coup to be sure, though perhaps a bit of an overreach for such a small role. Perry White will probably never leave The Daily Planet building, and to cast someone of Fishburne’s stature feels a tad like over compensation. Add to this Russell Crowe and Kevin Costner as Superman’s dual dads, and “Man of Steel” certainly doesn’t lack for big movie star names. You have to wonder, though, why the need to cast so many well-known names in such small roles?

In any case, Zack Snyder’s Superman movie will star Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel and Amy Adams as Lois Lane. Christopher Nolan of “Batman” reboot fame is producing. Look for Supes to take flight again in 2013.

By the by, the last person to call on Caesar’s dead ghost in the movies was Frank Langella in “Superman Returns”:

Isn’t the movie rescheduled for 2013 now?

Hopefully he is better than Langella. I like Fishburne but I’m not exactly thrilled with this bit of casting news. Seems more like a bit of stunt casting to push this movie further from the norm than a real effort to create a good cast. Guess we’ll see.

Hey if Smallville can make Pete Ross black, and Marvel can make Nick Fury black, why not. Personally it reminds me of what was done in “Spectacular Spiderman” by changing Liz Allen to Hispanic and Jean Wolf black. It just makes sense SOMEONE would be of color. Surprised it wasn’t Jimmy. When Wizard Mag did their imaginary Ultimate DC lineup, Batman had a black Gordon.

If they were really brave, though, they’d make Lois Lane African-American. Zoe Saldana, Paula Patton, Gabrielle Union … now that would be a great way to kick tired ol vanilla tradition in the butt.

That’d be awesome but I don’t see it happening.

        Sent on the go!
