Green Lantern Gets an Official Plot Synopsis, Official Villain

Via the blokes at CBM, here’s your first look at the official synopsis for Warner Bros.’ upcoming “Green Lantern” movie, starring Ryan Reynolds. Besides the epic movie from director Martin Campbell in 2011, you can expect a new “Green Lantern” animated TV series and possibly another direct-to-DVD movie in front (or around) the same time as the movie’s release.

Bringing the enduringly popular superhero to the big screen for the first time, “Green Lantern” stars Ryan Reynolds (“X-Men Origins: Wolverine”) in the title role, under the direction of Martin Campbell (“Casino Royale”).

In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan.

Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before. But Hal is clearly the missing piece to the puzzle, and along with his determination and willpower, he has one thing no member of the Corps has ever had: humanity. With the encouragement of fellow pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), if Hal can quickly master his new powers and find the courage to overcome his fears, he may prove to be not only the key to defeating Parallax…he will become the greatest Green Lantern of all.

Campbell directs “Green Lantern” from a screenplay by Greg Berlanti & Michael Green & Marc Guggenheim and Michael Goldenberg, story by Greg Berlanti & Michael Green & Marc Guggenheim, based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics.

The film also stars Blake Lively (upcoming “The Town,” TV’s “Gossip Girl”) as the spirited Carol Ferris, a test pilot and the heir apparent to her father’s aviation company; Peter Sarsgaard (“An Education,” “Flightplan”) as scientist Dr. Hector Hammond; Mark Strong (“Sherlock Holmes”) as Sinestro, Jordan’s powerful mentor in the Green Lantern Corps; Jay O. Sanders (“Revolutionary Road”) as Carl Ferris, Carol’s aircraft designer dad; Temuera Morrison (“Star Wars” Episodes II and III) as Abin Sur, Jordan’s alien predecessor; Taika Waititi (TV’s “The Flight of the Conchords”) as flight navigator Tom Kalmaku, Hal’s good friend and confidante; Academy Award® nominee Angela Bassett (“What’s Love Got to Do with It”) as enigmatic government scientist Amanda Waller; and Academy Award® winner Tim Robbins (“Mystic River”) as Hector’s influential father, Senator Robert Hammond.

The film is currently scheduled for release in 3D and 2D on June 17, 2011. “Green Lantern” will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

So … Green Lantern vs. Parallax. As I recall, Parallax was an alien parasite of some sort (pic above) that made ol Hal Jordan go nuts and kill the entire Green Lantern Corp. But of course the really tragic thing is that it also gave Jordan premature grey hair (pic below), which is, you know, not that attractive for a superhero with a green fetish.

Anyways, that’s not mentioning the menace of the big-headed Hector Hammond. And of course there’s ol Sinestro hanging around in the background…

My god YES. They have chosen a great starting point and a great cast. Even if I cant see Ryan Reynolds as anyone but the flash, this will be great.

To my recollection Parallax was Hal Jordan that was he new identity after he went ape-shit crazy when the Cyborg Superman destroyed his hometown I can't remember the name of it now and when he asked the Green Lantern Corps. to help rebuild it they turned him down saying that it was meant to be or something like that. So after all those years of him being a faithful Green Lantern he took it as a slap to the face and decided to take all the Power Rings for himself and called himself Parallax. Now this is what I remember unless DC decided to change things like always just like Marvel has been doing lately is one of the main reasons I stopped reading comics to begin with.

Although I would've preferred Reynolds focusing on a Deadpool movie, I have to say I'm pretty excited to see this. The cast and plot seems solid. However, I still want to hear news about whether or not my personal favorite Green Lantern — Kilowog — will make an appearance. =P

You are right. Later, in Green Lantern Rebirth, they explain that Hal Jordan had been possessed by a yellow monster when he became Parallax, and that that entity is in fact the real Parallax.

Oh ok yeah I haven't read in comics in years been keeping track every now and then. Such as Blackest Night and the rest of all that saga to go to graphic novel I'm still pissed that DC killed off Batman haha.

Was this 100% confirmed as official. It looks a bit sketchy and hasn't been tracked back to a real DC movie source yet.

Not that I don't trust Nix, I'm a bit skeptical too. Seeing as how there's been no mention of this the whole time then BOOM! It's kind of major. I think if they do go this route then we won't be seeing Blake as Star Saphire as she hinted at unless Sinestro gets his yellow ring, and becomes an agent of Parralax, and Hal needs help against the two (three if you throw Hector Hammond in the mix). Then they can have Hal go rogue possesed by Parralax in part two maybe and bring in John, Guy, or Kyle to take over for a bit until they free him. Just some thoughts.

But Sounds like too much going on to me. Hmmmsss we shall have to wait and see.

Looks pretty legit. CBM hasn't corrected themselves yet if it is wrong, and it's been a couple of days. The wording/writing is also pretty “studio-lese”, so if it is a fake, someone really studied up, which seems like way too much effort to release something outside of April 1st.

Cool. I'm not against the idea just wondering how they're gonna manage all this. They may skip the Hal as Parrallax thing all together and just go with the Parrallax the enitity.
