Green Lantern Movie Needs a Scummy Villain and a Beefcake Sinestro

Comic Book Movie News, Green Lantern (2011) Movie — By Nix on September 18, 2009

As expected, when Ryan Reynolds slips on the green tights in 2010 to play Green Lantern, protector of the spaceways and creator of cartoony green hammers with his mind, he’ll be facing Sinestro as his first foe. Or is he? As you’ll recall from the comics (and even the recent “Green Lantern: First flight” animated movie), ol Sinestro wasn’t always evil, though looking back, you sort of wonder what choice the poor dude had. His name was Sinestro, after all, and he did have an evil looking mustache, for crying out loud. Talk about telegraphing it!

Anyways, from a recent castling list unearthed by SpoilerTV, it looks like Sinestro won’t be the only (potential) villain facing our hero. Green Lantern will also be confronted with a more Earth-based villain in one Doctor Hector Hammond. Who is Hector Hammond?

[DR. HECTOR HAMMOND]
27-35, Character actor who is austere and impersonal, he is real “scummy.” He is a pathologist and also the son of a Senator.

[SINESTRO]
Mid-30s to Mid-40s, he is smart, tough, intimidating and in great physical shape.

According to Wikipedia, the comic book version of Hammond was a two-bit criminal who stumbled across a strange meteor that he used for his own personal gain, eventually becoming an enemy of Green Lantern. In the movie, though, Hammond seems to have gotten a sizable social promotion: not only is he now a Doctor, but he’s now also the son of a Senator.

Also confirmed as characters in “Green Lantern”: Carol Ferris, Hal Jordan’s love interest, and of course, Abin Sur, the alien who gives Jordan his ring in the first place.

I guess Hector was always, ahem, green with envy over Jordan's powers.

I know he’s older than whats called for but Jeffrey Combs would make an great hector hammond. And for Sinestro I’d go with James Marsters or if he wasn’t too old Gary Oldman. But neither will get cast with Reynolds as Hal. They’re gonna want someone older than Reynolds but still in good shape. Hmmms. Who could do it? Robert Carlyle wouldn’t be bad…not tall enough though. What do you guys think?

  • Nix says:

Some British guy would probably work as Sinestro, who I always envisioned as an uptight, class-conscious snob with power, hence his belief he’s better and knows more than you, and should be in charge.

That’s what I was thinking too. Hence the Gary Oldman, Robert Carlyle reference. And I Just figured out who…HUGO WEAVING!!!! AGent Smith basically WAS Sinestro. Ousted from the rest of the Agents and yet still wanting to enforce order throughout his world, no matter the consequences. Weaving would be perfect and has done both sci-fi and action as well as a comic adaptation. Damn fine casting if I don’t say so myself. LOL
