It’s amazing Ed Harris even got “Appaloosa” made in this day and age of lackluster interest in the genre. If even the megastar double billing of Russell Crowe and Christian Bale barely elicited minor interest in their “3:10 to Yuma” Western, what hope does Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen have with their “Appaloosa”? Like “Open Range” before it, I’m pretty sure I’m going to enjoy the hell out of “Appaloosa” when I finally get to see it. But then again, I’m just a sucker for Westerns, even if they do try to shoehorn Renee Zellweger and her squinty eyes on me.

The story is adapted from Robert B. Parker’s novel of the same name, centered on a pair of friends hired to protect a lawless town suffering at the hands of a renegade rancher. The arrival of an attractive widow disrupts their plans.
