Guillermo del Toro’s “Pacific Rim” has its moments, but it’s a little hard to get past the fact that it’s kind of dumb. I mean, really, really dumb. One of those movies where if you even allow your brain to think about anything that’s happening onscreen for even a second, it’s difficult to get past its, well, dumbness.
But I know it’s got its fans out there, and you guys are probably wondering what the hell’s up with the sequel. Well, if “Pacific Rim” director Guillermo del Toro has his way, there will be a sequel.
While out on the junket circuit promoting his upcoming FX show “The Strain,” del Toro came clean, telling Buzzfeed:
I’m working very, very hard with Zak Penn. We’ve been working for a few months now in secret. We found a way to twist it around. Travis Beacham was involved in the storyline and now I’m writing with Zak because Travis has become a TV mogul.
Well, I guess it’s not a secret anymore.
So what would be the plot of a “Pacific Rim 2”? According to del Toro, you can cross out a prequel:
Some people were wondering if we were going to do the prequel. I was never interested in doing that first wave of invasion. I’m going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, which are very different from the first one — but you will get really great spectacle.
Del Toro says he doesn’t have a greenlight or the money to make the film yet, but does confirm that the script he’s working on will feature Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi reprising their mech controllin’ characters from the first movie. Hopefully he’ll ditch the romantic plot between them cause, damn, that didn’t work at all, did it?
But never you mind honest emotions or derivative and logic-defying screenwriting — look, giant robots punching giant monsters in shiny cities!
