Oh, Romeo, you and your silly Juliet. Well, the star-crossed lovers are back at it again, this time with “True Grit’s” Hailee Steinfeld starring as Juliet, though no one has stepped up to play Romeo as yet. The 14-year old Steinfeld made waves this weekend when news reports had her doing her first nude scene for the movie’s crucial, ahem, consummation with Romeo, but I wouldn’t put money on that, pervs. That’s what body doubles are for.
Variety adds that “The Road’s” Kodi Smit-McPhee (also in last year’s horror remake “Let Me In”) has joined the cast as Benvolio, Romeo’s cousin who unsuccessfully tries to keep the peace between Tybalt and Mercutio. “Gossip Girl’s” Ed Westwick will play Tybalt, and like Romeo, Mercutio is yet to be cast. Holly Hunter, meanwhile, also previously joined the cast as Juliet’s Nurse.
Carlo Carlei is directing from a script by Julian Fellowes (“Gosford Park”), with the start of production scheduled for this summer in Italy.
