Hancock 2? Peter Berg Says It Will Happen. Eventually.

Will Smith in Hancock (2008) Movie ImagePeter Berg’s 2008 superhero movie “Hancock” was such an odd little/big movie. It was this grand, superhero movie that didn’t really have a whole lot of grand, superhero moments in it. The film’s biggest superhero battle was between the hero and … a housewife who wasn’t even the villain. Having recently seen the film again, I have to say, its oddity is even more pronounced. It’s a superhero movie that … just isn’t much of a superhero movie. If you’ve seen the film, you’ll know what I mean.

Having said that, it was certainly a pretty good comic book origins tale, even though it wasn’t based on a comic book, but let’s face it, it couldn’t have existed without comic books. So what about that sequel? Despite middling to borderline negative reviews, the film did go on to make $624 million in worldwide box office from a $150 million production budget, adding another notch to star Will Smith’s Hollywood blockbuster belt.

According to director Peter Berg, out promoting his latest sci-fi adventure “Battleship”, “Hancock 2″ may be headed to a multiplex sooner than you think:

We’ve been talking about the sequel between us, Will Smith, [producers] Michael Mann and [Akiva Goldsman] and myself. We’re all interested, but we literally just have trouble getting into the same room at the same time. We did have a series of meetings last year and started to hash out an idea for sequel — and Will Smith actually had the idea — so I think it will happen, it’s just a question of timing.

Currently, star Will Smith has two films on his plate — post-production/promotions for “Men in Black 3″, which has taken up way too much of his time given the production’s many issues, and the M. Night Shyamalan film “After Earth”, which Smith is co-starring with his son Jaden (playing his son in the movie).

So, “Hancock 2″ on the horizon? I guess we’ll have to see if Smith, Berg, Mann, and Goldsman ever manage to get into the same room together to further hash out that idea…

I liked the first. Interesting mythology. I think a second film should be part sequel part prequel. Where we’d start in the present, find out that Will and Charlie’s characters were NOT the last, and that there is one more. He’s been in hiding this whole time, and his mate was killed by humans. he hates humanity and has been undermining our lives for ceturies. He’d be like Ra’s Al ghul with powers, and now that he knows he’s not the last he wants company. We would flashback and see some of the earlier stuff of course. And when Will doesn’t join him dude goes after humanity AND Charlize!

i like that idea, maybe the bad guy could be played by (if you want someone who plays a good bad guy then i say ray liotta wich i can kindov see)-(but if you want someone who isnt really evil just vengful it would be cool to see matt damon) thoughs are just my thoughts, i would rather see matt damon do vengful bad guy, then have ray liotta because i dont allways like his charicters. just thought id put in my ideas and ramble

I could see both of them in the villain’s role. Good choices!

Definitely since it’d be something very different for both of them. I could also see Kevin Durand, Neal McDonugh, Cary Elwes, or Jason Isaacs in the role.

i like that idea, maybe the bad guy could be played by (if you want someone who plays a good bad guy then i say ray liotta wich i can kindov see, but in my eyes isnt always the greatest actor)-(but if you want someone who isnt really evil just vengful it would be cool to see matt damon wich i really like, and hasnt really played a role like that) those are just my thoughts, i would rather see matt damon do vengful bad guy, then have ray liotta. just thought id put in my ideas and ramble

Thanks. I was thinkign along those lines on the villain as well. I dont want him evil for the sake of being evil, but evil because he’s had to deal with so much pain and hate.

I like that take, a lot.

I’d certainly like to see a sequel, as long as Berg and co. learn from their mistakes: throw in some more supers instead of ending it on a confrontation between short and not very scary Eddie Marsan and Will Smith; don’t dance around the fact that in the past, Theron and Smith clearly had a physical relationship during times when such things were not looked upon well by even progressive individuals; and provide some history and info on the nature of the mated supers w/out rewriting the origin into stupid like “Highlander II.” I don’t know about anyone else, but I felt a little “Miracle/Marvelman” deja vu on certain aspects of the original. If they borrow a few more ideas, they could get something really interesting out of a sequel

Indeed! I saw it too, and liked that they went pretty dark with him at first.

And they could go dark because there was no original source-material to be faithful to. That’s the great thing about a concept like this. We could get a movie equivalent of “Holy Terror” (haven’t read it yet but know it began as a “Batman” book) where stand-ins let you portray iconic superheroes in ways that editors and fanboy outrage never would. With “Hancock,” you basically have Superman and Wonder Woman at your disposal. Go crazy with it

Most definitely. I think that would be the way to go.
