Captain America has found his leading lady, and its little known (in the States, anyway) British actress Hayley Atwell, who will be playing Peggy Carter, a member of the French resistance during World War II, and the Star Spangled Avenger’s love crush. Cap would later romance her niece, SHIELD agent Sharon Carter in modern times, which is, yeah, admittedly kinda creepy. But I digress.
The news comes from THR, who says Atwell, most recently seen in “The Duchess” and “Brideshead Revisited” landed the role over believed frontrunner Alice Eve (“She’s Out of my League”), who was thought to have all but gotten the job only a few days ago. Apparently not so much. Atwell also beat out fellow Brit and “Duchess” co-star Keira Knightley, though she won’t be able to say she beat out Emily Blunt, who reportedly declined the role when Marvel offered it to her.
The Joe Johnston-directed comic book movie is set to shoot in England over the Summer, with Evans as Steve Rogers aka Captain America, Hugo Weaving as his Nazi nemesis the Red Skull, and Sebastian Stan as Rog’s sidekick, Bucky Barnes.
The film is expected out in 2011, paving the way for Marvel’s uber superteam movie “The Avengers”, which will be directed by Joss Whedon.
