I’ve been reporting on Gareth Edwards’ “Godzilla” for so long that it feels like the film is about to open this Summer. But nope, it’s far from reality, despite the studio already planning a 2014 release date for the big G’s second iteration and teaser art for the film hitting the Interwebs.
So what’s Godzilla up to these days? Well, Edwards is still directing, so that’s the good news. The other good news is that Frank Darabont is now taking a crack at the script. And another positive news has Aaron Johnson being the studio’s choice to play the male lead in the upcoming film.
That is, if Johnson wants the gig.
Deadline says Johnson has been offered the role, but he won’t make a decision until he sees Darabont’s draft of the script. Given that Darabont’s work on the script was only announced a few days ago, I’m guessing that means it’ll take him a while to finish, so we won’t know if Aaron Johnson (of “Kick Ass” fame) signs on or not until weeks, maybe months down the road.
Johnson, who is currently shooting “Kick Ass 2: Balls to the Wall”, is coming off Oliver Stone’s “Savages” and “Anna Karenina” with Keira Knightley. While “Kick Ass” would make you think he might be playing some teenager or early ’20 something in “Godzilla”, a look at his work in “Savages” and “Anna Karenina” would tell you the kid could play much, much older if the situation calls for it.
Legendary, meanwhile, still has the Big G penciled in for a May 16, 2014 release.
