Tom Cruise would like all the millions of Jack Reacher fans out there to know that he’s heard your complaints and cries of heresy, and he’s “very sensitive” to your feelings, but you need to get over it cause he’s doing the movie (he’s actually filming it now as I type this) and that’s that.
Well okay, he doesn’t add the “that’s that” part, but that’s the vibe I got from this Empire interview. When asked about how he was going to play the 6’5″ Jack Reacher of Lee Child’s series of action novels, Cruise had plenty to say.
Firstly, I’m very sensitive to it. This is Lee’s book and Lee’s character. Him giving me his blessing is what made me do it. If he hadn’t then I wouldn’t have done it. Lee told me that the reason he wrote him that size (6′ 5″) is because that was just one element to his character, and that opened the door to me playing him.
So how is he approaching the character?
Reacher is such a great character. He doesn’t have a cell phone, he doesn’t have email. He’s off the grid. He pays for things in cash. People look at things through the prism of the colours of their life, but Jack Reacher does things the way we want to sometimes. In that sense he’s sort of a Dirty Harry, a James Bond, a Josey Wales.
He also buys new shirts whenever he arrives in town instead of doing laundry, which is definitely something I can get behind. Laundry sucks.
Christopher McQuarrie, who adapted the “One Shot” story for the film, is directing. The movie also co-stars Rosamund Pike as the love interest, Robert Duvall, Richard Jenkins, and Werner Herzog as the Big Bad.
