Highlander: The Source Goes Straight to TV

Highlander 5: The Source (2007) Movie — By Nix on August 6, 2007 |

I can’t say I’m surprised by this news, having seen the movie. Sure, it was an early cut of the film, but it doesn’t really matter how much you tweak something when it smells that bad, and “Highlander: The Source” smelled THAT bad. (read our review of it here) Now the eagle-eyed editors of Moviehole have noticed that the Sci Fi Channel has “The Source” listed as premiering on their channel in September, which basically means the producers have given up salvaging the movie (as was rumored they were attempting to do with a new “producer’s cut”) and is dumping it for as much cash as they can before the whole thing explodes in their faces. And when your movie “premieres” on the Sci Fi Channel when it wasn’t intended to? Yes, folks, it is THAT bad.

The world is falling into chaos. As he roams a crumbling city, Duncan MacLeod, the Highlander, remembers happier times before the love of his life left… Hopeless and alone, MacLeod finds his way to a band of immortal companions, including his mysterious friend Methos, and a mortal, Watcher Joe Dawson. Together this small group sets out on a quest to find the origin of the first Immortal and The Source of their immortality.

As I recall, the Highlander animated movie, “Highlander: The Search for Vengeance” also premiered on the Sci Fi Channel as part of their Ani-Monday programming. So having already seen that move, I suppose seeing “The Source” arrive on the basic cable channel wasn’t such a major surprise.

The basic premise was good. The execution went totally wrong. The firt point is they thru the Highlander TV show format out the window. Why is that bad? When the show hit the Darius episodes with the Watchers they finally hit their mark with the magic formula that made Highlander work. Everyone grew to know it and it was a great fit. For this movie the got rid of the formula. Even on a budget they could have made a few tweaks and made a more structured story for the fans stepping in a new directions. I think they could have done a great movie with the story if they followed the Highlander formula (flashbacks, backstory, cool transitions, etc.)

My question is was The Source on Sci-Fi Channel the first in the intended Trilogy or was it the complete trilogy hacked down to one 90 minute movie.
