Hilary Swank has signed on to star and produce “Shrapnel”, a sci-fi action movie that will be based on the comic book of the same name by Nick Sagan and M. Zachary Sherman, based on the concept by Sagan and Mark Long. Not to be mistaken with another action movie called “Shrapnel” by “Die Hard” director John McTiernan, the Swank version will find the “Million Dollar Baby” actress playing a former military officer who organizes a revolt on the planet Venus.
Set in the year 2250, the story follows a former Solar Alliance Marine, to be played by Swank, who spearheads an uprising on Venus, the last free colony, against an oppressive solar government in order to fight for the freedom of her people.
Toby Wagstaff will adapt the comic book for Radical Pictures, who also recently set up Joseph Kosinski’s sci-fi “Oblivion” at Universal.
Like most comic book publishers looking to make inroads in the movies, Radical has been going around town setting up comic book-turned-movie properties everywhere, though as far as I know, none of their films have actually moved into production yet. Besides “Shrapnel” with Swank, the company currently has Sam Raimi attached to “Earp: Saints for Sinners,” Brett Ratner on “Hercules” for MGM, and F. Gary Gray on the Sam Worthington comic book “Last Days of American Crime”.
Of course, we’ll have to wait to see if any of those titles actually gets made…
