Hollywood Officially Announces Another Crack at Godzilla

As rumored last year, Hollywood via Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. have now made it official: they’re taking another crack at Japan’s biggest import since sake and businessmen with terrible singing voices — Godzilla. Legendary’s head honcho Thomas Tull announced (via Variety) that the company has finally acquired the rights to the Toho beast, and that a new scaly pic will be forthcoming.

It’s still unclear if this will be a reboot or a sequel as previously reported. Either way, Legendary’s got a pretty good rep, having put out blockbuster hits like “300″, “The Dark Knight”, and “The Hangover”. Toho will release the film in Japan, while Warner will take care of the rest of the world.

The announcement of a director is expected shortly, which would seem to indicate they’ve already found one.

Godzilla: 10 percent bark, 90 percent tail.

If they do a sequel they need to make it like the cartoon that followed the first film, with Godzilla now fighting other mutated beasts. I think it’d be cool if we found out, “she” wasn’t the only one, and that there were other beasts that were affected but took longer to show up. If they do a complete reboot, I think they should still go with a mutated lizard, but make it a little closer to the original japanese look, with the giant spikes that light up and the fire breathing.

This is great news if Gojira is done right this time. The 1998 version was fun but way too campy. They should use the ghastly all-white eyes that was used in the Shusuke Kaneko film “Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah Giant Monsters All-Out Attack” from 2001; which was one of the best Gojira/Godzilla films ever made. Maybe this will also spawn blu-ray releases for Godzilla films in the United States; hello Sony and Classic Media!!! I think Toho, Legendary and Warner Bros. also need to do something with Biollante. She is a fascinating character. Maybe have someone awaken her because she is the only monster that Godzilla could not defeat. Keep the film dark, eerie and mysterious like “Cloverfield”. Have Godzilla nearly wipe out humanity on an epic scale and then have Biollante resurrected for the ultimate showdown. True kaiju fans want to know what happened with Biollante.
