Hostel 3 Moves Forward — Without Eli Roth

Just like its hapless victims, the horror subgenre that has come to be known as “torture porn” seems to have run its course much faster than anyone had expected. Except for the “Saw” films, there seems to be little appetite for more movies about comely American lasses (and their not-so-comely male counterparts) getting sliced and diced by mean-spirited killers with sharp knives and even sharper violent streaks. The latest news for the genre has Eli Roth’s “Hostel 3” moving forward — but without the man himself.

According to Bloody-Disgusting, who should know, they being a site dedicated exclusively to horror and what not, Lionsgate and Screen Gems are unwilling to concede that torture porn is done for, and have scheduled “Hostel 3” for production. Also according to the site, Eli Roth may not be involved as writer and director (having created the franchise, he wrote/directed the first two films), and the whole shebang might go direct to DVD.

The last part would seem like a good bet — save the money on theatrical promotions, send his thing directly to DVD, where the still remaining hardcore torture porn loyalists will eat it up in the privacy of their sick, twisted little basements. It just makes good business sense, if nothing else.

The first two “Hostel” movies concerned American tourists in Europe running into sharp objects like, you know, knives. And more knives. It spun off a series of imitators. The first “Hostel”, along with 2004’s “Saw”, are often credited with exploding the subgenre.
