Well you sort of figured this was coming after Bryan Singer announced that Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart would be reprising their roles as Magneto and Professor X in his upcoming “X-Men: Days of Future Past”, the sequel to Matthew Vaughn’s “X-Men: First Class”. After all, Wolverine already made an appearance in “First Class” in a rousing crowd-pleasing scene that, I have to admit, I didn’t know was in the movie until I saw it.
Now word has Hugh Jackman currently in talks to reprise the feral mutant in “Days of Future Past”, joining “X-Men: First Class” returning stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult on the sequel.
Based on the early ’80s comic book story arc by Chris Claremont, “Days of Future Past” would find the X-Men racing against time to stop a major event that would trigger a doomed future for mutants.
Jackman, of course, is currently shooting “The Wolverine”, which may or may not have anything to do with the “X-Men” universe. Frankly, I still don’t think Fox knows what they’re doing with their X-Men properties. Then again, if it wasn’t for what Marvel have done with their movie universe, studios like Fox and Warner would have been happy to keep on going the way they have for the last 20 or so years, simply putting out movies without any grand thoughts about a coherent “universe”.
So the lesson here? Thank God for Marvel.
