Idris Elba is the New Alex Cross

He’s a loser no more: “The Losers’” Rogue, Idris Elba, has been named the new Alex Cross in a reboot of the mystery/thriller film franchise based on the character created by prolific author James Patterson.

The rising Elba (he can be seen in the upcoming “Takers”) will replace Morgan Freeman, who has played the crime-solving Alex Cross in two previous movies, 1997′s “Kiss the Girls” with Ashley Judd and its sequel “Along Came A Spider” in 2001. The character has been missing from cinemas since.

In the rebooted “Cross”, the crimes are very personal this time around, as the titular hero pursues a serial rapist who may have murdered his pregnant wife years before.

Forensic psychologist Alex Cross’s storied career in private practice, with the FBI and as a Washington, D.C., cop has brought him into contact with all kinds of seriously disturbed killers, but his 12th outing from bestseller Patterson (after 2005′s Mary, Mary) may be the ultimate in lunatic deadliness. Beginning with a flashback to the murder of Cross’s wife, Maria, Patterson quickly introduces Michael Sullivan (aka the Butcher of Sligo). What follows is a frenetically paced series of brutal rapes and killings by Sullivan, once employed by the mob as a freelancer and now at war with them. Cross juggles being a single parent and being involved in the dangerous game of tracking serial killers until he finally decides to give it up for his family. Needless to say, he’s drawn back into the game when it promises a chance of finding Maria’s killer. Cross’s competence and vulnerability make a stark contrast with Sullivan’s sadistic mutilations and psychological manipulations of his victims. Fans know that Cross will survive, but at what cost?

David Twohy, who last helm the killer movie “The Getaway”, will direct from a script by Kerry Williamson after he takes it for a spin. Lloyd Levin and Leopoldo Goutm will produce along with Patterson.

The powers that be are looking at a 2011 start date.

That was a ways off anyway Dom. Still in pre-production so it wasn’t gonna be filming anytime soon anyway. I think they we’re going for a 2012 release or so with that. If that’s the case, and they want this out in 2011, they’ll have the time to do it. I mean it may get pushed back a little but they can still do 2012. If they start shooting at the middle or late end of 2011 that is. But enough about waiting for Roddick (which I am too).

I think Elba would be great for this role. I really do.

I am an Idris Elba fan! He’s an awesome actor and after I saw him pull off a New York accent “TO A T” on a daytime show I am totally convinced he is the perfect LUKE CAGE.

He’s very good. And would definitely be a great Cage, but I still think Michael Jai White is Cage.

Acting wise Elba is better than MJW. MJW is an excellent Martial Artist,in great shape,is a great action star and is actually from NYC but Idris Elba would bring much more gravitas to the screen and all he’d have to do is bulk up.

    Definitely agreed.
