Idris Elba Officially Joins Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim

Guillermo Del Toro’s futuristic mecha versus monsters movie “Pacific Rim” already sounds cool, but now it’s just gotten like, five times (or possibly ten times) cooler with the official casting of Idris Elba, who will be lending his effortless cool to the film and joining “Sons of Anarchy’s” Charlie Hunnam.

The film harkens to Japanese animation like Gundam and Macross, where human-piloted giant robots (aka mechas) are used to battle invading alien creatures/monsters.

Elba has been in “Takers” and “Thor”, and is rumored to be up for the lead in Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained”. No word on who he will play in “Pacific Rim”, but it’s apparently a role originally conceived for Tom Cruise. Which is kind of odd, when you think about it. The two couldn’t be more different in just about every way, and I’m not even talking about just visually.

“Pacific Rim” begins its defenses this November.
