If Jon Favreau Wants the Mandarin, Then by God he’s Going to Get the Mandarin

As they are wont to do, MTV currently has an interview with director Jon Favreau that they are slicing up into 500 different posts, with each post teasing something different. Hey, if someone was paying me by the post, I’d do it, too, so no hard feelings, MTV. In any case, in one of the posts, Jon Favreau once again reiterates his need to get the Mandarin for the third “Iron Man” movie. And since “Iron Man 2″ just opened to a billion dollars (give or take a couple of hundred million here and there), I’m relatively certain Marvel isn’t going to quibble with him over it.

Says Favreau:

“You have to do The Mandarin. The problem with The Mandarin is, the way it’s depicted in the comic books, you don’t want to see that. He also has 10 magical rings, and it just doesn’t feel right for our thing, so it’s either tech-based or the rings are not really rings.”

It’s interesting that he refers to the Mandarin’s ten rings as “magical rings”, as I did in a previous post before being set on the right path. The rings are actually alien tech salvaged by the Mandarin, so they are not actually “magic”. I wonder if Favreau knows this?

In any case, we probably won’t know what “Iron Man 3″ or the Mandarin will look like until “The Avengers”, “Thor”, and “Captain America” hit the screen in 2011 and 2012. Hopefully Favreau will also be back, and hopefully this time he’ll let loose more with the action.

Ah life, a learning experience. LoL. Awesome man. But doubtful he knows. It's just the abilities they grant can basically be seen as magic. I really hope he goes alien tech, and include Fin Fang Foom. I know, I know, giant alien dragon is crazy but it'd work and give IM something else to fight in the film other than the Mandarin. Like what if the rings were previously used to enslave the alien dragons or keep them confined or something, and Mandarin has Fin Fang Foom as his ultimate trump card.

    Alien magic is still magic.

But they're not. They were the power source of an alien ship. Anything as advanced as that without an scientific explanation (by Earth science that is) would be seen as magic. If you went back in time with gun, they'd think it was magic (thank you “Army of Darkness).

Here's part of Wiki's entry on the rings: “The principal personal weapons of the Mandarin are the ten rings which he wears on the fingers of each hand. The rings' operations cannot be explained by contemporary Earth science, but it is known that they served as near-limitless power sources for the warp-drive engines of the Makluan starship of Axonn-Karr. The Mandarin learned how to convert the rings to his personal uses and to make them respond to his mental commands.”

And here's the page for more info on the character and his rings: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandarin%27s_Rings

I want to see Madame Mask(not as villain),Ghost, Fing Fang Foom, and The Mandarin in Iron Man 3

If MM isn't a villain what is she there for? A love triangle? Please let's not complicate poor Tony's life anymore. I'd love Fing Fang Foom and Mandarin. Ghost I'd save for an Armor Wars type story. WHat's he stealing from Stark for the Mandarin?

  • ulik

Don't bring in Black Widow, for Iron Man 3 replace her with Madame Mask, change cannon a little by having MM help Tony triumph over his alcoholism and stop Ghost . Ghost would just be a more non-conventional character in an Iron Man movie and Fing Fang Foom would be an alien that was kept in a hibernation chamber inside the alien ship and unleashed upon Iron Man controlled by The Mandarin.

I dunno. I don't think they're going the Demon in a Bottle route. Favs said its too much of a downer of a topic, plus you'd have all the other stuff going on. Hence the whole Tony drunk in armor scene in IM2. it was an homage, with Rhodey suiting up because Tony just isn't living up to what he has built himself into. I think with Ghost on one end and Fing Fang Foom and Mandarin on the other thats more than enough. You could have MM be another business rival, one with dubious connections (like Mandarin) and have her hire Ghost to try and steal Stark secrets. Meanwhile using MM and her play at corp espionage as a distraction, Mandarin would start a power play as well using tech stolen from Stark and the alien ship that had the rings. He creates an army of soldiers in armor with low rate copies of his rings. When he realizes IM and War Machine are more than he bargained for he releases FFF but unfortunately doesn't have as much controll as he thought he had. With the world at stake the final fight would be between IM teamed up with The Mandarin to stom Fin Fang Foom from unleashing his brothers onto our world.

I like that idea too, that'd be a good twist.

Thanks. I try. Just figured MM would be a good connection to Mandarin. Actually have everything connect. The Hammer/Vanko thing was my inspiration.
