If Jon Favreau Wants the Mandarin, Then by God he’s Going to Get the Mandarin

As they are wont to do, MTV currently has an interview with director Jon Favreau that they are slicing up into 500 different posts, with each post teasing something different. Hey, if someone was paying me by the post, I’d do it, too, so no hard feelings, MTV. In any case, in one of the posts, Jon Favreau once again reiterates his need to get the Mandarin for the third “Iron Man” movie. And since “Iron Man 2” just opened to a billion dollars (give or take a couple of hundred million here and there), I’m relatively certain Marvel isn’t going to quibble with him over it.

Says Favreau:

“You have to do The Mandarin. The problem with The Mandarin is, the way it’s depicted in the comic books, you don’t want to see that. He also has 10 magical rings, and it just doesn’t feel right for our thing, so it’s either tech-based or the rings are not really rings.”

It’s interesting that he refers to the Mandarin’s ten rings as “magical rings”, as I did in a previous post before being set on the right path. The rings are actually alien tech salvaged by the Mandarin, so they are not actually “magic”. I wonder if Favreau knows this?

In any case, we probably won’t know what “Iron Man 3” or the Mandarin will look like until “The Avengers”, “Thor”, and “Captain America” hit the screen in 2011 and 2012. Hopefully Favreau will also be back, and hopefully this time he’ll let loose more with the action.
