Why do people always want to be force fed information? This film works with our basic knowledge and understanding of story telling particularly in the sci-fi film genre.

Its told from the point of view of some guy who just happens to have a camera when the shit hits the fan! How the hell would he know whats going on- the military didnt even know what was going on for christ sake! And how could you when some randomly, gigantic beast from who knows where shows up all pissed! When the bombs went off in the London Underground, my Taiwanese mate didnt find out until his mum and dad rang up from Taiwan asking if he was alright and he lived in central!! Its a massive city! Someone could get shot on the otherside of the road and you'd probably never know it happened let alone why it happened!!

I think the film done a near on perfect job of capturing real life panic and confusion. That was the point! And all this debating on how many creatures there were and where its from is a load of old tosh because if there were a tape documenting such atrocity, the viewer let alone the poor sod filming it all could not have those answers. If you don't like documentary/real-life style filming where you have to piece it together from your own general knowledge of life & fictional, unexpected occurrences and still not really lead to a conclusion (kinda like how life is anyway!!!), then go watch some bollocks like Dare Devil or The Thunderbirds Movie (the one from about 4 years ago!). You really dont need to be told where the thing comes from, use your imagination, thats what the film asks of you:
-giant unexplained creature= alien? some deep sea creature thats just woken up? nuclear testing mutant? maybe even the whole of New York started hallucinating slightly different versions of a similar event due to some chemical warfare gas bomb that secretly went off just off shore and what people are actually seeing is an escaped chimp from Central Park Zoo harmlessly swinging off of lamp-posts, causing mass panic and unnecessary violence (a social commentary about how America panics over something they haven't really looked into or experienced, but decides to go for the kill anyway!)
-exploding people= the damage inflicted by the little flea creatures causes a bad reaction in our bodies that causes explosively high blood pressure?! maybe they inject you with mini fleas that burst out?

Just where exactly in a film that plays like reality would some stereotypically-British scientist (coz it's always a stereotyped, emotionless, prudey, British scientist) pop out from, presumably the monsters arse replete with speckle glasses and a stool sample and spurt some crap like, "chin chin, spiff spoff, this abomination is a relic from the cold war that the Russians have been hiding from us since before the cold war and was given to them by the Greeks when their mythologies became unfashionable. Im just glad we got to it before the 'Eye-raqi's' did!" Or some other bullshit explanation. What a cop-out that would have been. Of course, if the film had been shot from a traditional story telling point of view then there would be room for that kind of stuff, but it wasn't was it?! It wasn't about the creature, it was about the mass reaction to it.

Use your brains people! There's a whole world in there thats just waiting to be explored and there's more than one way to tell a story ; )

ok everyone there are no set ideas on what happened but there are like three theories and they are all based around the thing that fell from the sky.The most believable theory is that the monster has been sleeping for thousands of years in the ocean which is based off of a real life sound that was captured and is uncertain what it is. but anyway the thing that fell from the sky in the coney island scene is beleived to be a japanese sateilite that belongs to the company slosho or something but thats the company that Rob is going to work for and in the begining if u look on jasons shirt you see hes wearing a slosho shirt and the logo appears in the movie a couple other times. But the satelite is also supposed to be from another company i dont know what its called but thats what ive heard. but the other two theories are that that thing fell from the sky and mutated a whale and some crabs which is beleivable or it can from space but thats the highly unlikely one considering JJ said in an interview that its a baby and its been sleeping for a thousand years so when the baby is awoken by the satelite its mom goes to look for it and thats also why there are two monsters. The one that kills hud is alot diff from the one that is destroying the town because u see fighter jets go to bomb the monster and they fly right over them but the one that kills hud comes right from behind them also if the camera were to fall from the mouth of the mother monster it would have surely broke even if it did land on grass and the camera stays intact cause the monster was smaller and there are many physical features that separate the two.

i think the thing falling into the ocean is the monster. where else are those little parasites gonna come from... oh i know starship troopers.(jk) clover field is one of the best monster movies because of the way it was shot. non of this watching the government plan some stupid strike or having a background story to kill our immaginations. its as if we were there.

I do see something falling from the sky and landing in the water at the end of the movie...It could be a piece of satellite that awoke the monster that was sleeping for years. Anyways I like the part where they think they killed it and then *CHOMP* down goes the helicopter.

...I wish people would take it upon themselves to learn how to properly spell.

Anyway, I just saw it tonight and it was the creepiest thing, walking out of the theater and thinking about something like that happening to me. No one knew what the hell was going on throughout the entire movie and I thought it was a redeeming factor... creates more suspense, you know? I hope there is some sort of sequel with more explanations of the event because all this talk about 6 different monsters has gotten me really interested... I feel like I need to go see it again to watch for the changes and that damn satellite falling in the ocean. Also, for the transmission after the credits. I left (oops).

It's definitely multiple monsters. The face of the monster battling the Army (with spidery eyes) looks different from the monster that attacks Hud and spits him out (which looks more reptilian). The tail/tentacle that knocks down the Brooklyn Bridge hints at a possible third beast.

This would also explain why the military can't destroy "it." As they blow one up, another takes its place.

Ok, so from what I am getting from everyone is that there is one monster!!@!. In a way I want to believe that but it keeps gnawing at me. I cant get over the fact that every time I saw the "GIANT MONSTER," It was different. One more amphibious or lizard like with a tail and tenticals, one walking two legged with a tail, more muscular and smaller. and one that seems to have 100 story arms that have adapted to be its feet(which gets the helicopter.) And at the end the monsters face did not look the same when they were going ballistic on it, and compared to side angles of different scenes it does not look like the creature at the end. Someone said it before to that claws on the monster were different. Its parasites were also lookalikes to the aliens on starship troopers. Give me feedback I want to know if anyone has also noticed this, keep open minded this movie wasn't made to draw conclusions.

Steven king , a grandmaster of horror commented as such. One example he used was an old series called "the nightstalker"( goolge it hipsters), this find the monster sleuth mystery show that was a great sucess until........ the writers started showing the monsters!!!
The human imagination does a much better job then any special effects can!
not to mention the audience wants to believe!!
look at the sucess of Dr.Who, special effect laughable, audience wanting more, after all these years.
Cloverfield took a vial of the human imagination added a healthy pint of blair witch potion ( another proven monster sucess)
gave that to a redbull drinking youtube obsessed hipster nation....
BOOM instant sucess!!
its a no brainer brainiac idea!!!

Whats crazy is that this was the disadvantage to J.J. keeping the movie's contents so secret that he practically created a sub-culture of people who were trying to figure out as much as they can on the Cloverfield monster....so once the movie came out you have tons of people who were let down by the lack of explinations to whatever it is they were dying to find out about the movie.I'm finally gonna watch the movie tonight and i still don't care how vague the contents are in this movie...if its shot by one person thru one camera the whole way thru..i'd like to see what he WAS able to catch while the city is being attacked by the flesh eating flea infested monster(s)causing havok.lol
Pre-bumps to this movie!!!

There is definitely more than one big monster, the one that kills Hud at the end is nowhere near as huge as the one they are bombing at the end, I mean c'mon that one was like demolishing skyscrapers with its arms when is flailing around when the bombs hit it. The big huge one was like a tripod too, and the one at the end looked like it was moving around on four legs, and then the one thats coming straight at the characters when they're saving the girl from the building looked like it was moving around on 2 legs. I think it was a great movie, maybe it helped that I hadn't read anything about it before i went to see it, just read some stuff about the whole vertigo thing, didn't even know it was about a monster until my friend mentioned that to me before we went to the movies lol.

Yah, it sheds parasites which look like little crab/spider things. It has hind legs, but they're small, has a small neck with the head on it, two giant skinny arms that go outward from about it's back that help it walk and then two smaller arms from it's chest. That's it. I hope there is a sequel filling in the gaps later on cause I would really like to see what it is :] Awsome movie though.
