Robert Downey Jr. is talking about “Iron Man 2”, and according to the star, the sequel will not incorporate the “Demon in a Bottle” storyline from the comic books, although it will have twice the action and even more character stuff. The last part would seem to contradict — more character development and twice the action of the first movie? Is that even possible? And oh yeah, what about Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow?
RDJ tells E! Online:
“The film is almost entirely about character, and yet we still have twice as much action as we did last time, so it’s going to be nuts,” Robert tells our own Thea Andrews of the super sequel, set to start filming Monday. “Essentially ‘Iron Man 2’ is about looking behind the armor, or the armature, of a superhero. It’s one thing to say you’re Iron Man, it’s another thing to be fully ready to do that.”
About Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow:
“We’ve been rehearsing and she’s in insane shape. She’s getting lean and mean.”
Meanwhile, on Friday last week RDJ told MTV this about the storyline for “Iron Man 2”:
When asked if the film was based on this famous [‘Demon in a Bottle] story arc, Downey told MTV News, “Not really.”
“As a matter of fact, I think that’s probably best saved,” said Downey, “ because it’s such its own storyline.”
This matches Jon Favreau’s thoughts last year that, while “Demon in a Bottle” may come one day, it doesn’t need to be in “Iron Man 2”. Hopefully, Downey has quite a few “Iron Man” films ahead of him.
So, what is the storyline, outside major cast additions?
“We’re going for the interim space [between the origin and “Demon”],” explained Downey, “which is more a look behind the mask of someone who says he’s Iron Man and what it really is to become a superhero.”
So no “Demon in a Bottle” storyline, but definite lots more action, and possibly more Scarlett Johansson than we thought. Originally I think everyone thought she would only show up in the sequel in a glorified cameo until the third movie, when she would go full-blown Black Widow, but apparently that may not be the case.
Below: Now just picture her with dark hair and a Russian accent…
