Iron Man 2’s Jon Favreau Talks War Machine, Whiplash

It’s been on the minds of comic book geeks for a while now: Will Jim Rhodes finally don the War Machine armor sooner or later? Apparently it might be sooner. As in, in the second movie. Director Jon Favreau pretty much comes out and says it to Empire Online, where Favreau said this about Rhodes’ character (played by Don Cheadle, who famously replaced Terrence Howard from the original) in the sequel:

“Rhodesy is definitely stepping up in this film. Let me put it this way: Tony’s not the only person with technology in the film.”

Also, about Iron Man’s new obstacles in the sequel:

“Tony’s expected to be a role model and I don’t think he’s ready to be one. He’s under a great deal of pressure and when you’re under pressure, I think you find outlets for that. That’s one of the tensions of the film: it’s one thing to say you’re Iron Man, and another thing to actually become Iron Man.”

“Outlets”, Jon? Like the bottle, perhaps?

Anyways, Mickey Rourke will also be in the sequel, playing the new Russian supervillain Whiplash. He said this about his role:

“I’m having the time of my life! It’s been really brutal, because my Iron Man suit weighs 23lb. It’s sort of a half-suit, with half my skin showing, with lots of Russian tattoos, because [Whiplash is just] out of a Russian-zone prison.”

Word is, Whiplash will be joining forces with industrial bad guy Justin Hammer, played by Sam Rockwell, who probably won’t be suiting up anytime son. Except, you know, in an actual suit.
