Iron Man 3 Final Poster and RDJ Talks About Hanging It Up as Ol Shellhead

Shane Black’s “Iron Man 3″ is gearing up to be one of the biggest movies of the year, and it’ll be interesting to see how an established superhero franchise like ol Shellhead fares against Warner Bros.’ rebooted Superman flick, “Man of Steel”. One is still pretty brand new, but already a major brand, while the other used to be a major brand, but is now trying to reclaim some of that former glory. We shall see who comes out ahead this Summer.

Meanwhile, Marvel (via Yahoo) has released a new swanky poster (the final poster, we’re told) for “Iron Man 3″ that you can take a gander at above. People have been posting a ratty looking copy of this poster all morning that someone snapped from a theater lobby. I waited 30 minutes and this one showed up. Go figure.

Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man 3 (2013) Movie ImageAs for the franchise itself, according to Empire, Robert Downey Jr.’s contract with Marvel has “elapsed”, and RDJ has still to re-up. So what are the chances he won’t? Here’s RDJ himself on that topic:

Let’s just say the only thing I ever let go of had claw marks in it. There’s a little bit of soul reclamation going on. I feel that the first time I played Tony, I did it best. Sorry! The affinity with Tony now is: how do you sustain something? I’m not stupid, I like to play ball, I love the company, I love the character, and the business side of things, I’m not too picky about that, either.

But he did seem to make a point about not wanting to overstay his welcome in the iron suit. Say, what would happen if The Mandarin takes out Tony Stark in “Iron Man 3″?

It would probably be the best thing in the world for me. You know, ego… but sometimes ego just has to be smashed. Let’s see what happens. I take audiences very seriously – I feel bad when I see folks doing movies and the audience is like, ‘Don’t do that anymore.’ I don’t have to overstay my welcome.

“Iron Man 3″ (which Marvel is definitely hoping is not the last for RDJ in the iron suit) also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, James Dale Badge, Jon Favreau, and Ashley Hamilton.

The Iron Men strikes again May 3, 2013.

Just finish out the Avengers trilogy and I’ll be happy!

AWESOME POSTER!!! I really can’t see anyone else in the role now that RDJ has made it his own. Hopefully he keeps the franchise going for at least a few more sol Ironman films and Avengers sequels.

I actually think the idea of him steppinf down after the Avengers films isn’t a bad thing. I’d love for him to stay but I get where he’s coming from. That said if they do do something like that, they’d better do the whole Rhodey is IM Mark II like they did in the comics for a bit.

Are those all new suits in the background?? The middle suit on the right definitely looks like the space armor, but what the hell are the rest of them??

I think one of the left is Heartbreaker armor

hes not quitting. hes knows how a big a money cow hes riding and leading (cus it sure isnt that piece of wood called chris “captain america” guy) hes just laying groundwork for negotiations. and doing it very well i might add.

He earns his living making movies. This period also will not last forever. I suspect if the respect and $$ is there, he’ll make more.

RDJ was made for this role, i doubt there’s a better actor in the present that can portray tony as he did. Said that i think that the iron man franchise should rest for a while.

There are other Marvel characters that could be made franchise, im still hoping for a vision or hawkweye franchise. Maybe some punisher done the right way. Nova could also work.

i say let it rest and use RDJ only for the avengers trilogy and return to the franchise of Iron man with a new face
