Shane Black’s “Iron Man 3” is gearing up to be one of the biggest movies of the year, and it’ll be interesting to see how an established superhero franchise like ol Shellhead fares against Warner Bros.’ rebooted Superman flick, “Man of Steel”. One is still pretty brand new, but already a major brand, while the other used to be a major brand, but is now trying to reclaim some of that former glory. We shall see who comes out ahead this Summer.
Meanwhile, Marvel (via Yahoo) has released a new swanky poster (the final poster, we’re told) for “Iron Man 3” that you can take a gander at above. People have been posting a ratty looking copy of this poster all morning that someone snapped from a theater lobby. I waited 30 minutes and this one showed up. Go figure.
As for the franchise itself, according to Empire, Robert Downey Jr.’s contract with Marvel has “elapsed”, and RDJ has still to re-up. So what are the chances he won’t? Here’s RDJ himself on that topic:
Let’s just say the only thing I ever let go of had claw marks in it. There’s a little bit of soul reclamation going on. I feel that the first time I played Tony, I did it best. Sorry! The affinity with Tony now is: how do you sustain something? I’m not stupid, I like to play ball, I love the company, I love the character, and the business side of things, I’m not too picky about that, either.
But he did seem to make a point about not wanting to overstay his welcome in the iron suit. Say, what would happen if The Mandarin takes out Tony Stark in “Iron Man 3”?
It would probably be the best thing in the world for me. You know, ego… but sometimes ego just has to be smashed. Let’s see what happens. I take audiences very seriously – I feel bad when I see folks doing movies and the audience is like, ‘Don’t do that anymore.’ I don’t have to overstay my welcome.
“Iron Man 3” (which Marvel is definitely hoping is not the last for RDJ in the iron suit) also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, James Dale Badge, Jon Favreau, and Ashley Hamilton.
The Iron Men strikes again May 3, 2013.
