Scarlett Johansson in Iron Man 2 (2010) Movie Wonder Con PosterIf you’re wondering if “Iron Man 2′s” best asset, Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow, will return for the franchise’s third outing, then wonder no more — she is, and Johnasson will reprise the character, making “Iron Man 3″ the third time she’s played the SHIELD superagent in three movies.

A casting notice for the upcoming film, set for a 2013 bow, now features more information on the returning cast.

Set to be written and directed by Shane Black (of “Lethal Weapon” fame), “Iron Man 3″ will, of course, feature Robert Downey Jr. back as Tony Stark/Iron Man, with Don Cheadle once again playing James Rhodes (having replaced Terrence Howard in the second movie). Gwyneth Paltrow, as Stark’s love interest Pepper Potts, will also return. And, of course, Johansson as Natasha Romanoff aka The Black Widow.

Here’s an interesting bit, though: Rhodes is described in the casting notice as “Stark’s personal pilot, chief aviation engineer for Stark International, and one of Stark’s closest friends”. So, does that mean in part 3 Rhodes (or Rhodey as his friends call him) will have given up his Air Force commission for private work? Sounds like it.

“Iron Man 3″ will commence shooting in the Wilmington, NC area and other locations in North Carolina from May 21, 2012 through September 7, 2012, so if you’re interested in getting a gig on the production, best start sending in those headshots now, kids.

SO in setting this “Tom Clancy” like sequel, we have to have S.H.I.E.L.D. present with Black Widow. it only makes sense. And I like the route they’re going, I’m thinking we may still get the Mandarin. Can you imagine if the Ten rings decided to become more overt, and they decided to unite against Iron Man. Instead of One man with Ten Rings, imagine Ten men with one ring each leading their own small army, all having tech based on the rings.

I’m exited to see where Shane Black takes the franchise. Black Widow could be better utilized in a solo movie or in a SHIELD film in my opinion. As for Cheadle reprising the role of Rhodey and his new career status a more important question is if he’s going to be suiting up again as War Machine in this installment. My hope is that they create an asian rival company to Stark Industries (maybe Mandarin Enterprises LLC.) wanting to buy out Stark’s share of his company. The company is actually a front for the ten rings. Have the head of their merger be someone like Madamme Masques’ alter ego, Whitney Longfellow.

That would rock, and of course have the head of the Asian company be Mandarin. So where as Stark is the good side of the coin using tech he’s created, the mandarin would be the flipside, and have him using the ten rings to reverse engineer new tech to compete with Stark Industries.

I like the idea of there being members of th company/terrorist factions being representative of he “ten rings” more so than there actually being a character of The Mandarin. The corporate front being called Mandarin Technologies or Mandarin Enterprises is enough of an allusion. I think that the inclusion of the corporate facade would be a cool way to work in those aspects without coming off as too hokey. In the comics Ironman’s arch nemesis is Mandarin. However, Mandarin is essentially the rings. Since the ten rings have been manifested in the film series as a moniker for the terrorist organization it only fits to do the same for the Mandarin. It would be cool to see a scene where Tony meets with the Mandarin Corporation. One of Shane Black’s witty dialogue between RJD’s Stark and he tribunal of corporate goons (Fing,Fang and Foom) who flank Ms. Longfellow aka Madamme Masque would be awesome.

You know I’m all for allusions, ut I’d love to see a full on Madarin. I like your idea, alot actually. But I like the idea of Gene Khan being the elusive head of The Mandarin Corporation, with Ms. Longfellow being the public face. The Ten Rings is his criminal empire, and Iron Man has been crippling it for the past few years. I just think having a physical representation of the chracter would be better because it would be SO different than another man in a suit, or a lot of soldiers with weapons. The Fin Fang Foom allusion can stay though!!!

If Khan were an actual character I like the idea of him being the corporate raider figure. I also like the reverse engineering of the ring technology. I suppose it all would depend on where The Avengers film takes us. If the giant metallic creature that is at the end of the trailer is indeed an incarnation of the Fing Fang Foom dragon then the three buisinessmen angle for the FFF allusion would be useless. However, that would be a good segway into the rings being discovered for Khan to use and reverse engineer. There have been allusion to the rings in both Ironman and Im2 (Stane, Raza, Hammer, Vanko) wich was a way to incorporate the rings while not having them be the comic version. The physical representation of actual power rings would detract a bit from that.

Not if each person had a ring but were not privy to their abilities. He gave them out to his generals and such as a way for people to identify they were Part of the Ten Rings, and now he’s taking the rings back because it’s time to take some action. I’d play him like Luthor, a puppet master who isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty but can get out of most things do to money an connections or even like Doom with diplomatic immunity to a point.

          • Juggernaut

That would be a cool scenario. I really hope that the mechanical creature from the end of The Avengers trailer doesn’t turn out to be Fing Fang Foom so that there could be some kind of tie between FFF and the rings like in the comics. I hope that it turns out to be the Midgard Serpent.
A scene where his hired hand, The Ghost, brings Khan the rings of Stane, Raza, Hammer, Vanko and the other six generals who have fallen to Ironman would be awesome. He goes to his research facility and activates them to power a new weapon of mass destruction.

exactly, and yet that still isn’t the “big gun” he is when he uses the rings. They would be a power source when connected to machinery but his weapons when he has them.

cant they find better actress for the widows?

    • Juggernaut

Emily Blunt was originally being considered by Favreau for the role but her schedule got in the way. How about Ivanna Millicevic? She isn’t exactly a “better” actress but I always thought that she’d make a good Black Widow.
