Ever wondered what happened to that “Runaways” movie that Marvel had planned on doing? (No, not the 2010 movie starring the girl from “Twilight”. The one that was supposed to be based on the comic book series by Brian K. Vaughan.)
The film was originally announced way back in 2008, but in 2010 we heard that Marvel was putting the movie on hold to concentrate on other things, like those guys from the Avengers. It’s now 2013, so when can we expect to see the Runaways on the big screen?
Don’t hold your breath, according to “Iron Man 3” writer Drew Pearce, who wrote the script for “The Runaways”. Pearce recently revealed the fate of the movie during a podcast following a screening of “Iron Man 3” as the Los Angeles Film School:
We were really close to being made, and then this movie started to happen called The Avengers. Oddly, it pulled focus from the unheard-of brand Runaways, and it really did kind of consume the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s there, maybe it’ll be a Phase Three movie, I really hope so, I’m really proud of it and I think it’ll be a brilliant film, but I think it all depends what Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel, what his master plan is.
Sure, there’s still the possibility that you might see the Runaways on the big screen one of these days, but considering that Marvel has their films planned out for decades at a time, and we haven’t heard any mention of the Runaways since 2010, you probably shouldn’t hold your breath.
The comic book, for those curious, involved a bunch of kids that discover their parents are in fact supervillains. The kids run away, band together, and become superheroes in hopes of righting their parents’ wrongs. It was a pretty snazzy comic, and might actually make a pretty decent TV show…
