Is Christian Bale Your New Frontrunner in Ron Howard’s Dark Tower? – UPDATED

UPDATE: Not so, says Deadline, who reports that Javier Bardem has officially been offered the role of gunslinger Roland Deschain. Huh. I would have been happy with Viggo Mortensen or Christian Bale. Bardem just never looked like Deschain to me. I mean, even just his name — Roland Deschain. Anyways.

That’s the word from the New York Post’s Page Six, who cites unnamed sources as saying that in the aftermath of his Golden Globes win for “The Fighter”, Christian Bale has suddenly jumped out ahead of both Javier Bardem and Viggo Mortensen to play the mythical gunslinger Roland Deschain in Ron Howard’s big-screen adaptation of the Stephen King fantasy novel series.

Besides Bale as Deschain, the same article says that “Dexter’s” Jennifer Carpenter, along with French/Moroccan actress Ghita Tazi, are also in the running to play the female lead, Susannah.

I like Bale in almost any role, and getting him for “The Dark Tower” would be a major coup for Howard and company. With only “The Dark Knight Rises” as his next major role (and potentially last film as Batman), Bale should be mostly available to take on another franchise.

I understand that The Gunslinger is a man of few words but Javier Bardem can barely get through a sentence while speaking english. Don’t get me wrong, Bardem has been very good in the few films that I’ve seen him in. But Roland he is not! I was partial to Bale. Even Viggo would have been better. Although my pick has always been Jim Caviezel.

Bardem speaks fluent english. And you keep your Caviezel Jesus jelly out out of my Dark Tower peanut butter.

Fluent yes, accent-less no. And Caviezel could easily work, but I’d still have rathered Viggo.

If you’ve red the Books, remember how ugly Roland has to be, Bardem is just perfect for such a role (cf no country for old men)

He might be ugly but he had blue eyes and wasn’t latin

I woulda picked Mortensen or Bale myself. Bardem is ok.
