Oh, teen love. Remember when asking out that cute girl in Chemistry class was the toughest thing you ever had to do in your life? Nowadays there are werewolves and vampires and other supernatural complications to deal with. Man, dating has gotten dangerous! Novelist Maggie Stiefvater’s three-novel Young Adult series about a teenage girl and her werewolf boyfriend would seem to fit that mold, or at least producers Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne hope so because they’ve just shelled out some buckaroos for the series with an eye towards turning it into a movie trilogy.
Stiefvater’s first installment in her three-book series is called “Shiver”, and follows a teenage girl name Grace who shares a friendship with a wolf that once saved her life when she was younger. When a mysterious boy name Sam with yellow eyes show up, Grace realizes that he’s the wolf, but can only be human for a few months during the summer. In winter time, when it gets cold, he must revert back to wolf form. Further problems arise when a local boy is killed by a wolf, and a wolf hunt by the locals threaten Sam’s life. Can Grace save her hairy boyfriend? Best get that electric razor handy…
“Shiver” was on the bestsellers list for six weeks, which means it was a hit. The second installment, “Linger” is due out next August. No word if moody vampires will enter the picture, though there are still two additional installments left, so you never know.
Variety has the producers going to Warner Bros. with the book before looking for a writer.
