In this post-“Avengers” world there is a great deal of movement in the Marvel camp, with three big-time sequels in the works. One of those, “Captain America: Winter Soldier”, the follow-up to 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger”, has been looking for an actress to play the Agent 13/Sharon Carter part. They’ve looked at names like Imogen Poots, Allison Brie, and Teresa Palmer, among others, but reports are coming out that Marvel’s top choice may be someone not on any of the previous shortlists: Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
Carter is the niece of Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), Cap’s love interest from the first film, though in her original incarnation she was Peggy’s daughter. Looks like Cap has a thing for the ladies of this family, since Sharon is the love interest for present-day Mr. America.
Winstead has some action in her background. She was in “Live Free of Die Hard”, “Death Proof”, “The Thing”, and has a sweet fight scene in “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World”. I’d like to see her get more opportunities to wear a black leather jumpsuit and kick the crap out of people, how about you? The 28-year-old actress is currently hearing Oscar talk with her name in it for her part as an alcoholic in “Smashed”.
This same article also notes that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (“Game of Thrones”) and Josh Holloway (“Lost”) are up for an as yet unspecified male part in the superhero flick.
“Captain America: Winter Soldier” is slated to open April 4, 2014, so we have some time to ponder all of these goings on.
