It’s Good to be King: Sharlto Copley Joins Maleficent

Sharlto CopleySharlto Copley is one busy fella this week. Besides signing up to play the villain in Spike Lee’s “Oldboy” remake, he’s also fronting the new horror movie “Open Grave” for director Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego.

Now you can add the live-action “Maleficent” to his busy schedule.

In “Maleficent”, Copley will play King Stefan opposite Angelina Jolie, who is playing the titular role. “Maleficent” fills in the backstory of “Sleeping Beauty”, specifically why the evil Maleficent (Jolie) has such a hate for the young Princess Aurora in the first place. I suspect love gone wrong is to blame. Ain’t that always the case with chicks?

Jude Law was previously rumored for the King Stefan role, with Elle Fanning rumored for Aurora.

“Re-imagined” movies of fairy tales are popular nowadays. You’ve got the three battling “Snow White” movies, “Hansel and Gretel” as witch hunters starring Gemma Arterton and Jeremy Renner, and not one, but two fairy tales-based TV shows on network TV at the moment. But you know what all those films don’t have? Angelina Jolie. That might make all the difference. (Though honestly, Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen in “Snow White and the Huntsman” looks pretty damn, well, appealing, too.)

Disney already has “Maleficent” scheduled for March 14, 2014, with Robert Stromberg set to make his feature-film debut on the production.
