Remember the days when only big time Hollywood studios could drop cars or helicopters into the middle of a busy intersection and call it an action movie? Yeah, those were the days. Now you can shoot your own video and run it through an iPhone app and get a pretty sweet, even convincing version of that same Hollywood action movie stunt.
And it’s all thanks to J.J. Abrams, whose Bad Robot shingle has released a new iPhone app called “Action Movie FX” to the masses. All you’ll need to make a “scene” is to shoot five seconds worth of video and apply the app’s effects. You can currently download the app for free, which comes with the “missile attack” and “car smash” effects. You can then choose to download/buy additional effects, like the “chopper down”, “tornado”, “airstrike”, or “fire fight attack”.
Of the six currently available, “fire fight attack” is probably the least effective, mostly because strange hands popping out of nowhere with guns is just weird. A chopper, or a car, or hell, even a tornado appearing out of nowhere, on the other hand? Strangely convincing.
Here are some examples of what people have been doing with the app:
